Toyota
C-HR
The Toyota C-HR is an economical and stylish crossover that offers great build quality at an affordable price. First launched in 2016, it has since seen incremental yet important improvements.
It was originally launched as a more stylish hybrid variant of the RAV-4 and it achieved just that. Its rather wide stance and low roofline sets it apart from some of its rivals and gives it more of a sporty look.
Despite being strongly marketed as a hybrid, there are some petrol-powered variants kicking around that are perfect for someone not ready to make the jump just yet.
Inside, the Toyota C-HR has very functional and simple-to-use controls, making it easy for a newcomer to familiarise themselves with it.
Models from 2019 onwards feature Toyota’s Touch 2 media system, which features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. In addition to this, all C-HR models include a DAB radio, reversing camera and Bluetooth.
All trim levels get LED running lamps, climate control, automatic lights and wipers, an eight-inch touchscreen, and adaptive cruise control.
Optional extras include keyless entry, power-folding mirrors, parking assist, heated seats, an uprated JBL sound system, and larger 18-inch alloy wheels.
Across its life, the Toyota C-HR has been available with either a petrol or hybrid engine. The engines range from a 1.2-litre petrol engine to the 1.8-litre hybrid engine, and the most powerful 2.0-litre unit.
We would recommend going for the hybrid engine if you spend a lot of time around towns or cities, or either of the other options if you do a lot of longer motorway driving.
On the road, the C-HR is a comfortable car to drive thanks to its forgiving suspension and sharp handling.
Most model variants come with an automatic gearbox, but some base models come with a manual gearbox. All versions are front-wheel drive and come with a choice of driving modes: Sport; Normal; and Eco.
For decades, Toyota has been renowned for its reliability, and despite having a complex hybrid system, the C-HR is no different. The C-HR uses many tried-and-tested components, helping it to stay as reliable as possible.
All Toyota C-HR models from 2019 onwards come with wireless Apple CarPlay.
The two outer rear seats come with Isofix child seat connectors.
The Toyota C-HR is the brand’s smallest crossover SUV, sitting just below the very popular RAV-4.
Despite its coupé-inspired name, all Toyota C-HR models come with four doors.
