‘4x4’ specifically refers to the fact that all four wheels are driven – sometimes just two are driven and the other two kick in when you lose grip, and other times, all four are permanently powered by the engine or electric motor(s).
SUV, or Sports Utility Vehicle, is the type of car that we Brits love. It usually covers anything from a mid-sized family SUV upwards, but smaller crossovers also fit into this category.

These days every manufacturer has a range of SUVs, but pay attention because not all have four-wheel drive.
Some only have the 4x4 functionality with certain engines and trims, so pay close attention to any specific model you like the look of if having all-wheel drive is important to you.
Below are some of the most popular used SUVs on sale in the UK that are available with 4x4.
Driving a 4x4 SUV should be no different to any other SUV – you’ll sit up nice and high and there’ll be plenty of space for passengers and luggage.
The 4x4 system will more often than not need no attention, but there are some specialised 4x4 SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler which allow you to select things like low-range gearing and differential locks to tackle extremely challenging terrain.
The most obvious feature is the 4x4 system, known sometimes as all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD).
Because 4x4 systems are usually reserved for more expensive SUVs and higher trim levels, you could also get luxuries and practicalities like air suspension and a tow bar.
On that matter, 4x4 SUVs are excellent for towing. When you’re pulling a trailer, caravan or boat that could be well in excess of one tonne, you want to be sure that you won’t be getting stuck on any mud.
They’re especially popular among outdoorsy people and anyone living in rural and remote areas, where road conditions might not be so agreeable.
Sometimes a 4x4 system is just part and parcel of owning a large, luxurious SUV, so it’s just an added bonus.

Absolutely – if the front wheels in a front-wheel-drive car (FWD), or the rear wheels in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) car, are slipping, you could get stuck in mud and snow. You’ve got double the chances of getting free with a used 4x4 SUV.
AWD systems can add extra weight to a car, which means they could negatively impact fuel economy. Modern 4x4 systems are so efficient that the difference has become way less stark.
Many manufacturers use their own names to denote 4x4 models, such as xDrive (BMW), quattro (Audi), 4MATIC (Mercedes), 4MOTION (Volkswagen), e-4ORCE (Nissan) and ALL4 (MINI).
Take note that some electric cars with more than one motor (for example Tesla’s Dual Motor models and Volvo’s Twin Motor cars) put a motor on each axle (front and rear), making them four-wheel-drive cars.
