Driving position

Finding the perfect driving position in the Škoda Octavia Estate is really very easy and always has been.

It feels less like a car and more like a custom-fitted suit, thanks to a massive range of adjustments for both the seat and the steering wheel.

Whether you're tall, short, or somewhere in between, you can sit low for a sporty feel or raise the seat for a commanding view of the road.

The seats themselves are a highlight. They’re well-shaped, supportive and designed for marathon road trips. In higher trims, you even get electric memory seats and massage functions, ensuring you step out feeling fresh after a long drive.

Everything is ergonomically laid out so that the gear shifter and the infotainment screen are exactly where your hand expects them to be.

Visibility is another win for the Octavia. Unlike many modern SUVs with chunky pillars and tiny windows, the Estate features large glass areas that make pulling out of junctions or reverse parking simple.

It’s a confidence-inspiring setup that makes a large car feel remarkably easy to handle from the second you belt up. We’ve driven earlier versions of the Octavia Estate (and cinch content team staff have owned a couple) and can confirm this has always been the case.

Tech and features

The Octavia Estate is a bit of a tech-lover's dream that doesn't forget the basics.

The centrepiece is a large 13-inch infotainment screen that’s fast, sharp and easy to use. It has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and for those who like to talk to their car, the “Laura” voice assistant is now powered by ChatGPT to help with everything from checking the weather to answering tricky trivia questions. Seriously, try it.

And like with all Škodas, you benefit from its ‘Simply Clever’ features such as the umbrella located in the driver’s door and the fuel-cap ice scraper.

In addition to this, you now get a cooled wireless charging pad that prevents your phone from overheating while it tops up. There are also high-power USB-C ports throughout the cabin (including one by the rearview mirror for your dashcam).

Engines and power

Škoda Octavia Estate performance stats

– Power: 115hp to 265hp

– 0-62mph: 6.5 to 10.6 seconds

– Top speed: Up to 155mph

– Driven wheels: Front-wheel drive (FWD)

The Octavia Estate is available with a wide range of engines, making it a versatile choice for different types of buyers.

Kicking off the range is the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine, with either 115hp or 150hp.

This can be had with either a six-speed manual or a slick seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

We’d say this is the best pick for most people, but if you want something sporty or do lots of motorway miles, keep reading.

Despite the shift toward electric, Škoda knows that for high-mileage drivers, diesel is still king. The 2.0-litre TDI remains a master of the motorway, available with 115hp or a punchier 145hp.

It’s incredibly frugal, capable of returning well over 60mpg on a long run, making it the ultimate tool for crossing the country with a boot full of gear.

For those who want to add a bit more spice to their drive, the vRS has been dialled up to 265hp.

It’s front-wheel drive and uses an electronic limited-slip differential to help you put all that power down through the corners.

It’ll hit 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds, which is plenty fast enough to surprise a few sports cars at the lights, all while having a bigger boot than some SUVs.

Handling and ride comfort

This is a family car, so it’s set up with one goal in mind: to be as comfortable as possible at this price point. If you’re expecting it to ride like a Rolls-Royce, then we have some bad news for you...

The suspension is remarkably soft, soaking up potholes and jagged city cobbles with a composed thud rather than a bone-jarring crash, which is a tricky thing to achieve with a car so low to the tarmac.

On the motorway is where the Octavia is happiest, though. It settles into a long drive with excellent stability, making it one of the best long-distance companions in its class.

Even on a twisty road, it feels smaller and more agile than its cavernous boot suggests, making it surprisingly easy to thread through narrow country lanes or loop your way around a multi-storey carpark.

Practicality

Our rating: 10/10

Boot space

Škoda Octavia boot space:

– Boot space: 640 litres

– Incl. rear seats folded: 1,700 litres

When it comes to boot space, the Octavia Estate isn't just a class-leader, it’s practically in a league of its own.

It offers a massive 640 litres of space with the rear seats up, which is enough to swallow everything from a flat-pack furniture haul to a very pampered Golden Retriever with room to spare.

By comparison, the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports has 598 litres, and the Volkswagen Golf Estate gets 611 litres.

Fold the Škoda’s rear seats down using the handy levers in the boot, and that space expands to a staggering 1,700 litres.

It’s so cavernous that you’ll start to wonder why anyone bothers with an SUV.

Rear seats

If the boot is the Octavia’s party piece, the rear seats are the comfortable after-party.

There’s an incredible amount of legroom back here. So much so that even tall adults can sit behind a tall driver without their knees ever touching the seatback.

It comfortably beats almost every other hatchback-based car in its class, feeling more like a 7 Series luxury barge than a family estate.

The Estate’s long, flat roofline means headroom is generous, even if you’ve opted for the optional panoramic sunroof.

The bench is wide enough for three kids to sit abreast without a “he’s touching me” argument breaking out every five minutes, and the outer seats feature easily accessible ISOFIX child seat points.

Storage solutions

Škoda’s engineers seem to have anticipated every possible daily annoyance, packing the cabin with small, thoughtful touches that make you wonder why every car doesn't have them.

Up front, you’ll find the signature umbrella hidden in the door and a large storage area under the armrest for bigger items.

The door bins are massive – large enough for 1.5-litre water bottles and even feature a tiny, removable waste bin for receipts and sweet wrappers.

You also get a dedicated ticket holder on the windscreen pillar, and a funnel built into the washer fluid cap, so you never spill a drop when topping up.

In the back, the cleverness continues with dedicated smartphone pockets on the front seatbacks – the modern-day equivalent of a ring-bound map slot.

Škoda Octavia Estate dimensions

– Height: 1,480mm

– Width: 2,003mm (incl. door mirrors)

– Length: 4,698mm

– Kerb weight: From 1,227kg

Safety

The Octavia carries a five-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring exceptionally well for both adult and child occupant protection.

Škoda has packed it with a suite of assistance systems that don't just warn you of danger but can actively step in to prevent a collision with other cars, pedestrians or cyclists.

All models have automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert and assistance and an eCall system to contact emergency services in the event of a collision.

Cruise control with a speed limiter is also standard, and so is adaptive cruise except on SE models, where it’s a paid extra.

Running costs

Our rating: 9/10

Fuel economy

The Octavia Estate proves that you don't need a plug to get impressive efficiency. Whether you're a high-mileage hero or live in a city, the Octavia is designed to keep your fuel bills as low as possible without making life complicated.

The 1.5-litre petrol is the star of the show for most drivers. It uses a clever 48V mild hybrid system to harvest energy when you slow down, allowing the car to coast with the engine off at motorway speeds.

You can expect a very respectable 54-56mpg, making it a fantastic alternative to a more expensive full-hybrid or EV.

For those who do a lot of motorway miles, the 2.0-litre TDI diesel is still unbeatable. It’s a master of efficiency, officially returning up to 64mpg.

On a steady long-distance run, it’s not uncommon to see that figure climb even higher, meaning you can easily cover over 600 miles on a single tank.

Even the sporty vRS isn't as thirsty as you might think. While it's tuned for fun, it still manages around 40mpg in daily driving.

It’s the perfect compromise for those who want performance without having to visit the petrol station every other day.

Reliability

Škoda offers a fairly standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty on the Octavia, which is passed on to subsequent owners.

They’re generally considered reliable cars, and the Volkswagen Group backing only adds to this.

If you’re buying a used Octavia, servicing doesn’t have to be complicated, which is why we offer cinchServicing at over 100 locations across the country.

Ultimately, the Škoda Octavia Estate remains the gold standard for anyone who values substance over style.

It's a car that genuinely understands the assignment of being a family workhorse, offering more space than almost anything else on the road while staying remarkably affordable to run.

While it might not provide the high-riding feeling of an SUV, it more than makes up for it with a superior ride, better fuel economy and a boot that could practically have its own postcode.

From the clever interior tech to the range of ultra-efficient engines, it’s a polished, professional and endlessly practical choice that’s incredibly hard to beat.
