SEAT Leon buying guide
What types of used SEAT Leon cars are there?
The SEAT Leon is a mid-size family hatchback, sharing many parts with the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 but in a more affordable (but no less stylish) package. In addition to the hatchback model, you can also buy an estate version with extra boot space.
Popular SEAT Leon trims
In the case of the fourth-generation SEAT Leon for sale from 2020, the trim level options are really simple, and all models come with plenty of useful touches.
> SEAT Leon SE - base-spec SE car with LED headlights, rear parking sensors and touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring
> SEAT Leon SE Dynamic - worthwhile upgrade from the SE Dynamic with bigger touchscreen, front parking sensors and reversing camera
> SEAT Leon FR - sporty-looking, high-spec FR car with wireless phone charger, eye-catching alloys and drive mode selector
SEAT Leon history
SEAT has been building the Leon since the late 1990s, many years after the Spanish automaker joined the Volkswagen Group. Four versions have been on sale so far, each with its own unique style.
> Third-generation SEAT Leon (2012) - sharp styling, sporty handling and good value for money with plenty of equipment
> SEAT Leon facelift (2017) - some styling tweaks and engine efficiency updates
> Fourth-generation SEAT Leon (2020) - more mature design with a longer front end and a simpler interior with better in-car tech
What features does the SEAT Leon have?
Standard kit varies by generation and model year, but as a guide, most fourth-generation models should come with LED headlights, parking sensors, push-button start and cruise control.
In-car tech consists of a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Later versions of the third-generation car typically came with cruise control, air-con and a smaller touchscreen, but you still get smartphone connectivity.
Is the SEAT Leon reliable?
Although it might not be the most popular hatchback in terms of sales volume, the SEAT Leon shares most of its mechanical parts with the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia and Audi A3, which means everything is tried and tested.
On the whole, customer feedback is generally positive when it comes to the dependability of a used SEAT Leon.
How much does the SEAT Leon cost to run?
You can pick a used SEAT Leon for sale with a choice of economical petrol and diesel engines, which are about as efficient as any other similar hatchback on the road.
Where the Leon excels is with its choice of a plug-in hybrid system, which can be a few thousand pounds cheaper (when new) than any other similar PHEV. Its 20-40-mile electric range offers drivers an opportunity to slash local running costs.
Who is the SEAT Leon suitable for?
A used SEAT Leon for sale is a great pick for families who need a safe, reliable and affordable hatchback, but it’s also a compelling option for anyone who spends a lot of time alone in the car, because it’s compact and efficient, and it also looks sharp.
Other stylish and affordable hatchbacks worth considering are the previous-generation Renault Megane, the Mazda 3 and the Kia Ceed.
