Megane
The Renault Megane first came out in the mid-'90s, and offered another option for a solid family hatchback.
Since its first iteration, the French brand has overhauled the design and under the bonnet to produce one of the best hatches on the market in Britain.
Used Megane models are available with either three or five doors, whereas brand-new models are five doors only thanks to the rise of the SUV.
Its design is very much evolutionary over revolutionary, which has served it – and all its competitors – very well.
Speaking of which, the Megane’s main rivals are the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia and Vauxhall Astra.
Inside, the Renault Megane features some very good onboard tech and superb overall interior quality.
Entry-level cars get a seven-inch screen, with larger 9.3-inch and 10-inch options available further up the model line.
Functions such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the range, and RS trim models come with the option of a more powerful seven-speaker Bose sound system.
Other than that, all Megane models offer a very luxurious experience with plush materials and quality pieces of tech. However, it should be noted that Trophy-R models feature a sportier Alcantara interior with red stitching throughout.
The boot on the standard Megane measures in at 434 litres, which grows to 1,237 litres once the rear seats have been folded flat. This is plenty of space and means the Megane on par with its rivals.
There are three engine options available on standard Megane models, starting with a 130hp petrol engine that Renault claims will do 51mpg and is a great choice if you will be mostly driving around town.
The next model up features a 140hp engine that offers slightly less fuel economy but is much punchier on acceleration, meaning it's more than nippy enough for driving around town.
Sitting above that is the 115hp diesel engine that Renault claims will return 60mpg, making it the most fuel-efficient Megane you can buy. This is best suited to those driving longer distances on a regular basis.
However, if it’s true performance you’re after then Renault does make something called the Trophy-R, which is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces a staggering 300hp. This rivals the likes of the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Honda Civic Type-R.
We think the Megane would make a great family hatchback because it offers plenty of practicality, is very safe and is relatively cheap to run.
The main difference between the Megane and the Clio is that the Megane is larger and offers more powerful engine options and higher levels of practicality.
All new Renault cars are fitted with Isofix child seat mounting points as standard.
We would say that the Megane is a fuel-efficient vehicle, offering from 50-60mpg.
