Start nowThe HS (2019-present) is the largest SUV MG makes, making it ideal for large families.
In the UK, there are two trim levels: SE and Trophy. In other markets such as China and Australia, however, you can have Core, Vibe, Excite and Essence models.
With the HS being placed as a budget SUV, it won’t come close to any Range Rover as far as technology and luxury is concerned, but it still does a good job.
In the centre of the dashboard is a 10.1-inch infotainment system that’s easy to use and smooth to operate. It has an inbuilt sat-nav system as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity.
The standard SE trim boasts features such as a leather steering wheel, air-con, leather-style upholstery, reversing camera with sensors and adjustable seats.
Move up to the Trophy spec and you’ll get all the above plus heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, sportier seats, a 360-degree parking camera and ambient lighting.
In the past, MGs never had the best reputation regarding reliability, but when the brand was taken over by the Chinese giant SAIC Motors in 2007, this improved tenfold.
This change saw vast improvements to overall reliability and build quality thanks to SAIC’s expertise.
Every new MG car comes with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty that transfers to the new owner – assuming it hasn’t expired.
Following its most recent Euro NCAP crash-test, the MG HS scored a full five stars thanks to safety features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), ISOFIX child seat mounting points, plenty of airbags and a lane assist system.
There are two different engines on offer: a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) – both mated to an automatic gearbox.
Obviously, the latter is pricier, but you’ll save money in the long run with fuel costs as it’s more efficient.
In terms of fuel economy, the petrol engine offers around 35mpg, whereas the PHEV has a claimed figure of around 150mpg.
Insurance is another large factor in overall vehicle ownership, but with the HS sitting between insurance groups 16 and 33 (for older models), this shouldn’t be as high as with some other cars.
Being owned by SAIC, MGs are now more reliable than ever and therefore require less maintenance than perhaps they once did – providing you keep up with regular servicing and general maintenance.
A used MG HS is perfect for families who don’t wish to spend a fortune on a large SUV.
Buying this model will get you a great SUV deal that comes with lots of interior features and practicality.
The cost to buy a used MG HS on finance will depend on the specific model variant you pick, as prices will always vary across the range.
Our HS models are available on finance deals, giving you the option to spread the cost.
For a budget brand, you won’t be disappointed by the HS’s reliability. No car is perfect, but for the price you pay, this MG is impressive.
According to SAIC Motors (MG’s owner), the ‘S’ in the HS name stands for “the product of S5”: “Sense (new sense)” multiplied by “Super (super level)” multiplied by “Satiated (satiated experience)” multiplied by “Smart (smart peak intelligence)” multiplied by “Social (social exclusive circle)”.
The MG HS closely rivals the Dacia Duster, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
Absolutely. MGs never used to be famed for their reliability, but this has changed since SAIC Motors took over the brand in 2007. Now, they’re more reliable and built better than ever before.
