What types of used Mazda2 Hybrid are there?

The Mazda2 Hybrid landed in the UK in 2022 and remained on-sale alongside its petrol predecessor for a short while before replacing it.

It's based on the Toyota Yaris, which uses a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and an efficient CVT automatic transmission to maximise fuel economy.

Mazda2 Hybrid history

The Mazda2 itself has been going for many years, but the new hybrid model is fundamentally different, because it's a rebadged Toyota Yaris.

What features does the Mazda2 Hybrid have?

Even the entry-level Mazda2 Hybrid comes with a lot of useful equipment, like a nine-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a reversing camera and adaptive cruise control.

Screen sizes vary from nine to 10.25 inches for the central touchscreen and up to 12.3 inches for the digital driver's display depending on equipment level, so it feels every bit as high-end as you'd expect from a Mazda.

Homura Plus models are especially luxurious, with things like a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display and all those big displays.

Is the Mazda2 Hybrid reliable?

Under the bonnet is the 1.5-litre self-charging hybrid system used in the Toyota Yaris, and that's good news. Mazda itself already has a strong reputation for reliability, but so does Toyota, and it's a brand that knows a thing or two about hybrids.

Mazda's so confident, in fact, that in September 2025 is started selling new cars with a six-year/100,000-mile vehicle warranty as standard.

How much does the Mazda2 Hybrid cost to run?

Efficiency is one of this car's biggest strengths, with fuel economy figures of up to 74mpg. A figure we were able to achieve and exceed in a similar car with the same engine during our own testing.

Being a self-charging hybrid, you do without the complexity and cost of a bigger battery and having to charge it up. All you need to do is top it up with petrol and watch it cover hundreds of miles before running empty.

Who is the Mazda2 Hybrid suitable for?

We think a used Mazda2 Hybrid is perfect for people who need a relatively compact car that doesn't feel basic. It's suitably upmarket, and yet it's one of the cheapest in its class to run.

Besides the mechanically-similar Toyota Yaris, also watch out for competition from the Renault Clio E-Tech and Honda Jazz.
