The Hyundai Kona is a compact crossover that’s not too much bigger than a typical family hatchback, but offers plenty of interior and boot space. There are petrol, mild hybrid, regular hybrid and electric models to pick from.
Popular Hyundai Kona trims
There are only a few trim levels available for the Hyundai Kona, which makes it easy to pick a suitable model. Most come with more than just the essentials.
> Hyundai Kona Advance - standard Advance model with adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, keyless entry and dual-zone climate control
> Hyundai Kona N Line - sporty-looking N Line with more kit, such as heated seats, powered bootlid and wireless phone charger
> Hyundai Kona Ultimate - top-spec Ultimate model with leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof
Hyundai Kona history
Hyundai first launched the Kona in 2017, and after a few years on sale and the introduction of an electric model, a second generation followed in 2023.
> First-generation Hyundai Kona (2017) - a compact crossover with a range of efficient power options, great fit and finish and lots of equipment
> Hyundai Kona Electric (2018) - an electric model with almost-identical looks and two battery options
> Hyundai Kona facelift (2020) - styling enhancements, new N Line trim level and restructured packaging to free up more interior space
> Second-generation Hyundai Kona (2023) - complete overhaul with spaceship-looking design, including a full-width daytime running light
All Kona models feel well-put-together. As a guide, a second-generation model will come with at least dual-zone climate control, cruise control (adaptive cruise control for automatic models), front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and keyless entry.
Inside, there are two 12.3-inch displays – one for the digital instrument cluster and another for the touchscreen infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Even the earliest and most basic models will have air-con, cruise control and driver aid systems, such as a lane-keep assist and hill-start control.
Not only has Hyundai built itself a reputation for building reliable cars, but it also has an extensive history of using hybrid and mild hybrid systems.
All Hyundai cars come with a five-year/unlimited-mile warranty, so if you’re buying a used Hyundai Kona, consider stretching to a slightly newer one for that extra peace of mind.
Because it’s more similar in size to a hatchback than an SUV, the Hyundai Kona is very efficient to run. Whether it’s one of the popular 1.0-litre petrols, a mild hybrid or a regular hybrid, fuel economy figures should be slightly above average.
The two electric models offer ranges of up to 200 and 300 miles, and a full charge could cost around £3-4.50 on an off-peak rate (7p/kWh). This is based on 48.6kWh and 64.8kWh batteries.
A used Hyundai Kona for sale offers an economical entry point into crossover SUV ownership – you get all the benefits of a higher driving position and a spacious interior, but it’s also cheap enough to run.
It shares many of its parts with the Kia Niro, which is also available as a hybrid or an electric motor (no petrol-only option).
Other compact crossovers, such as the Volkswagen T-Roc, MINI Countryman and Volvo EX30 are also worth looking at.
