Start nowThe Hyundai IONIQ first came out in 2017 and quickly became a very popular option for those with an eye on sustainability.
Every version is considered a five-door hatchback, so benefits from a wide-opening boot despite the saloon shape, but you can pick from regular hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric variants.
A used Hyundai IONIQ seems to tick almost every box, because it’s affordable to run and buy, reliable, and seriously well-equipped.
Popular Hyundai IONIQ trims
You can count the trim levels on one hand, but every edition comes with a lot of kit.

Hyundai IONIQ history
Only one version of the IONIQ was on sale, between 2017 and 2022, but it inspired many future models.
> First-generation Hyundai IONIQ (2017) - Seriously impressive and efficient saloon-shaped hatchback
> Facelifted Hyundai IONIQ (2019) - Styling, quality and efficiency enhancements, worth the upgrade
Entry-level models come with cruise control, reversing sensors and climate control, but the allure of heated seats, a heated steering wheel and a reversing camera make mid-spec Premium models look great.
Compared to similarly equipped cars, the top-spec model is surprisingly affordable, and comes with cooled seats, adaptive cruise control and more.
The Hyundai IONIQ’s touchscreen infotainment system works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the facelifted models have a bigger and slicker system.
That mid-life facelift also improved efficiency for all models, but the electric model benefited from a much larger battery, enabling a longer range – a worthwhile upgrade.
Being a Hyundai, a used IONIQ will be reliable and comes with a five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty that can be transferred between owners. The South Korean brand has always been praised for its high levels of reliability.
We’ve seen examples of the regular hybrid model exceeding 60mpg consistently, and plug-in hybrid models can reduce running costs even further if you have access to a home charging point. The electric model, for this reason, is even more attractive.
The Hyundai IONIQ is an important model, because despite its impressive efficiency, it still appears to be a normal and practical family car. It’s a model you can buy because of its excellent style and quality, but you’ll also benefit from excellent fuel efficiency.
Other cars include the hybrid Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Passat GTE, or the electric Nissan LEAF. The Hyundai IONIQ also shares parts with the Kia Niro/e-Niro and Hyundai Kona models.

Not all Hyundai IONIQ models are fully electric. The Ioniq EV was introduced in 2010 and has since gone on to compete with some of the best electric cars on the market. Other models are hybrid only.
The bottom-of-the-range self-charging hybrid speaks for itself – it lets the engine charge it up, whereas the plug-in hybrid and electric-only models will need to be plugged into a wall charger or EV charge station.
The Hyundai IONIQ first came out in 2007 and has seen some drastic changes since then. These days, it is one of the most popular hybrids on the market.
