What is a 4x4 car?
A 4x4, or four-wheel drive (4WD) car, powers all four wheels at the same time, enhancing traction and stability. This makes it ideal for off-road driving and slippery conditions like snow, mud and sand.
With a 4x4 system, the engine's power is distributed to both front and rear wheels equally, allowing all the wheels to move independently. This is beneficial when some wheels lose traction, as the others can keep the vehicle moving.
There are two main types of 4x4 systems: part-time and full-time. Part-time systems let the driver switch between two-wheel drive (2WD) and 4WD, while full-time systems always power all four wheels.

Are 4x4 cars good in the snow?

Do you have to turn four-wheel drive on in a 4x4?
In most 4x4 cars, you have to turn four-wheel drive (4WD) on because it's less fuel-efficient. Some cars do have it on all the time though, so it's best to check for your car specifically.
How do I know if my car is four-wheel drive?
Sometimes, there’s a badge. Other times, there are switches in the cabin that indicate if it has four-wheel drive or not. If you’re unsure, it’s best to check the owner’s manual.
