What is a 4x4 car?

A 4x4, or four-wheel drive (4WD) car, powers all four wheels at the same time, enhancing traction and stability. This makes it ideal for off-road driving and slippery conditions like snow, mud and sand. 

With a 4x4 system, the engine's power is distributed to both front and rear wheels equally, allowing all the wheels to move independently. This is beneficial when some wheels lose traction, as the others can keep the vehicle moving. 

There are two main types of 4x4 systems: part-time and full-time. Part-time systems let the driver switch between two-wheel drive (2WD) and 4WD, while full-time systems always power all four wheels.

The main difference between 4x4 cars and rear-wheel drive (RWD) cars is that the former drives all four wheels while the latter only drives the rear wheels.

Who are 4x4 cars suitable for?

Before SUVs went mainstream, 4x4 cars would ordinarily be reserved for off-roading duties and farmers, but now, many cars are available with four-wheel drive (4WD). 

This is especially useful because drivers can rely on their cars more to help them out in snowy and icy conditions.

What’s the difference between 4x4 and AWD?

4x4s have four-wheel drive (4WD) systems and are typically cars capable of going off-road or are performance-focused, allowing drivers to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel modes depending on how much grip they need.

All-wheel drive (AWD) systems automatically distribute power to all wheels, providing better traction for everyday driving, but aren't as capable when the going gets really tough. 

Are 4x4 cars safe?

Yes. In fact, in many cases, they may be safer than 2WD cars, offering more stability and grip in tough driving conditions. 

Are 4x4 cars good in the snow?

Yes. If you’re planning on driving in the snow, a 4x4 will make your life much easier because all four wheels can move the car forward, increasing your chances of maintaining grip compared to a front- or rear-wheel drive car.

Do you have to turn four-wheel drive on in a 4x4?

In most 4x4 cars, you have to turn four-wheel drive (4WD) on because it's less fuel-efficient. Some cars do have it on all the time though, so it's best to check for your car specifically.

How do I know if my car is four-wheel drive?

Sometimes, there’s a badge. Other times, there are switches in the cabin that indicate if it has four-wheel drive or not. If you’re unsure, it’s best to check the owner’s manual.
