Start nowThere’s only one version of the Cupra Formentor – a low-slung crossover. It shares many of its mechanical parts with the Cupra Leon.
Popular Cupra Formentor trims
Cupra sells a range of V- and VZ-branded trim levels for the Formentor, with numbers typically signifying how well-equipped they are.
> Cupra Formentor V1 - entry-level spec with large touchscreen infotainment display, digital instrument cluster and keyless entry
> Cupra Formentor V2 - high-spec car with heated front seats, leather upholstery and a reversing camera
> Cupra Formentor VZ2 - sportier V2 with rear diffuser, heated steering wheel and dynamic chassis control with drive modes
Cupra Formentor history
The Cupra Formentor was Cupra’s first standalone model after it split from SEAT. It follows on from the launch of the SEAT-derived Cupra Ateca.
> Cupra Formentor (2020) - attractive crossover model with performance and more normal engines designed to appeal to the masses
> Facelifted Cupra Formentor (2024) - redesigned front end with a slightly more minimalist interior
Even the oldest and most basic used Cupra Formentor for sale will have bright LED headlights, a 12-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and keyless entry.
Higher-spec V2 cars add soft Nappa leather upholstery, heated front seats and a reversing camera.
VZ1, VZ2 and VZ3 cars add sportier styling and tweaks to improve handling, like dynamic chassis control, as well as some luxuries like a foot-operated electric bootlid, high beam assist and bucket seats.
A used Cupra Formentor is generally considered to be reliable, with robust build quality and dependable performance. It helps that the Formentor shares parts with the Leon and other models from Cupra, SEAT, Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi, so everything is tried and tested.
A range of engine options are available, with a range-topping 310hp 2.0-litre petrol engine ending up the most expensive to run. Cupra claims an optimistic 33mpg, and it coincidentally sits in insurance group 33.
Besides more economical 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrols, there’s also a pair of 1.4-litre plug-in hybrids that can do around 30 miles on electric power alone, which helps to cut running costs.
The cheapest 150hp 1.5-litre petrol is in insurance group 19 and should get you around 50mpg.
A used Cupra Formentor for sale is an appealing choice for young families who maybe need the extra rear seat and boot space of an SUV, but still want something stylish and fun to drive.
If you're looking for a sporty-looking crossover, you may also wish to consider an Audi Q3 Sportback, BMW X2 or Volkswagen T-Roc.
Cupra builds the SEAT at its Catalonia factory in Spain. It shares many of its parts with another Spanish brand, SEAT, and the rest of the Volkswagen Group, which builds cars across Europe.
Initially a sporty division of SEAT, Cupra became its own brand in 2018 but still sits under the VW Group umbrella. Having tweaked its own version of the SEAT Ateca, the Formentor became the first Cupra-only model.
Cupra is considered to be a premium alternative to SEAT, which means you get additional equipment and a higher-quality finish. What you get from an entry-level Cupra model might be more similar to a mid-spec SEAT, which makes the price difference less stark.
Yes, although it’s pretty new, Cupra builds on Volkswagen’s history. That means durable build quality and excellent reliability.
Other sporty crossovers like the Cupra Formentor include the BMW X2 and Audi Q3 Sportback.
If you go down the premium compact SUV route, look at the Volkswagen T-Roc. Or, the saloon-shaped Peugeot 408 is a less conventional choice.
