BYD
Seal U
Use our Help Me Choose tool to go from 1000s of cars to just a handful of recommendations — and cinch your search.
Launched as BYD’s first plug-in hybrid, the SEAL U is a pretty large family SUV with stacks of rear-seat and boot space, so if you need something that’s up to the task of family life, this is the one.
It’s got a truly impressive hybrid setup that uses any combination of petrol and/or electric to drive the wheels or top up the battery on the go, for maximum efficiency.
Popular BYD SEAL U trims
You’ve got three trims to pick from, summarised as followed – small battery, big battery and performance.
> BYD SEAL U Boost – base model with vegan leather, heated seats and steering wheel, cooled seats, 15.6-inch touchscreen, head-up display and 360-degree parking camera
> BYD SEAL U Comfort – the only difference is a bigger battery, with 78 miles of electric range (up from 50)
> BYD SEAL U Design – this one gets the smaller battery, but all-wheel drive and more power, for 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds
BYD SEAL U history
On sale from 2024, the SEAL U has been a popular choice for families due to its size, efficiency and affordability.
> BYD SEAL U (2024) – this car hasn’t changed much since launching, but it doesn’t need to because it’s superb value
The three trim levels are near-identical apart from batteries and performance, which means there really is no bad pick.
As for tech, you get a 15.6-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 12.3-inch driver’s display, USB-C ports, twin wireless phone chargers, a head-up display, a premium Infinity sound system, keyless entry and vehicle-to-load (V2L).
On the driver aids front, you’ve got a 360-degree parking camera with parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign detection, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
Vegan leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, cooled front seats and a PM2.5 air filter round off some of the comfort elements you get.
It absolutely is, and because it was one of BYD’s first cars in the UK, plenty have been sold to give us the data we need to know how long-lasting they are.
Regardless, BYD’s impressive Blade battery technology is globally renowned not only because it lasts a long time, but because it’s durable and protected in accidents.
With an electric range of 43-78 miles, you might be able to do most, if not all, of your daily commutes without the petrol engine at all, opening up access to super-cheap running costs.
Even when the petrol engine is at play on a longer trip, BYD expects upwards of 50mpg for most models, and just under for the performance AWD variant, and from our testing, this is generally true.
Think of the BYD SEAL U as a mid to large family SUV, so it’s got the headroom in the back for taller teenagers and adults, and the boot space for bags and pushchairs.
It’s a great alternative to cars like the VW Tiguan, Nissan Qashqai and Toyota RAV4, which also have good hybrid systems.
The quickest 323hp Design variant will get to 62mph in 5.9 seconds, which is hot hatch territory. But even Boost and Comfort models will do the timed sprint in 8.9 seconds, which doesn't feel slow.
The BYD SEAL U is a plug-in hybrid, so charging it will get you an electric-only range of 43-78 miles. To maximise efficiency, it's recommended, but you can avoid charging it altogether and run it as a regular self-charging hybrid if you don't have access to a charger.
We think the BYD SEAL U might be better for growing families as it's a bigger and more spacious car. That said, you can get self-charging hybrid and petrol-only versions of the JAECOO 7 if you want to lower the purchase price.
