The latest models are only available with 2.0-litre engines, and the most popular for long-distance drivers will likely be the 204hp 40 TDI diesel.

There are also 204hp and 265hp variants of the petrol engine, which are badged 40 TFSI and 45 TFSI, as well as a powerful 299hp plug-in hybrid, badged 50 TFSI e, that can do around 40 miles on electric power alone.

For a while, there was also a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, badged 50 TDI, with 286hp. The latest-generation model, introduced in 2018, comes with mild hybrid technology for improved efficiency, depending on the specific engine.

A used A6 Avant S line comes with a sportier aesthetic than lower-spec models, including revised bumpers, large alloys, and a lower suspension setup.

Other equipment includes matrix LED headlights that adapt to prevent blinding oncoming traffic, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, keyless go, and a powered boot lid.

S line is a high-spec model, but it sits in the middle of the range beneath the more stylish Black Edition variant.

The most affordable model is the Sport trim, which comes with more than just the basics. Audi stopped selling the entry-level SE car when it introduced this model in 2018.

For a period, there was also a very premium Vorsprung model available, which was very expensive. Fortunately, buying a used one is far better value for money.
