What’s checked in an electric car service?

EV servicing checklist

Tesla Model Y

No matter what type of power your car runs on, it needs to be serviced in order to keep it running for many more years to come.

Electric cars are no different, but what exactly is checked during a service?

Faff-free servicing and MOTs

What is checked on an electric car service?

At cinch, we offer two different EV servicing tiers: a standard EV service (£159.95) and a full EV service (£214.95).

No matter which one you pick, they all get:

  • Full diagnostics and software update(s) (if applicable)

  • EV inspection (high-voltage components, cables, socket, battery charging status)

  • Essential car health checks

Upgrade to the full EV service for an air-con check and full visual inspection of the high-voltage components, cables and charging status of the battery.

How does it differ from a petrol or diesel service?

An EV service differs quite a lot from a petrol/diesel/hybrid service because there are completely different components to check.

The main difference is that an EV service doesn’t include any checks to a manual gearbox and clutch, engine oil, exhaust systems and spark plugs because it doesn’t have any.

But checks that are the same include brakes, suspension and tyres, as well as other fundamental car components.

Important areas on electric cars

All types of cars have important areas to check, and EVs are no different.

The main ones to check yearly are tyres, brakes and suspension components. Because electric cars are heavier, these parts can wear out faster, so it’s worth keeping on top of them.

Outside of these, checking the batteries, electric motors and software is also important to ensure the longevity of your vehicle.

Can anyone service my electric car?

Contrary to popular belief, electric cars aren’t as difficult to service as many people think.

While it’s true that many garages (including cinchServicing) are able to service them, you need specialised technicians who know what they're doing.

Luckily, we have 100+ locations nationwide where you can bring your EV for a service.

Easy ways to reduce electric car servicing and maintenance costs

While you can’t always predict when a car part is going to fail on you, there are a few preventative measures you can take to reduce the need for replacement parts.

Top tips to reduce EV servicing costs:

  • Keep NMC batteries between 20% and 80%

  • Drive smoothly to preserve your tyres

  • Use regenerative braking to conserve the brake pads

  • Never skip your annual EV service
