How big is the Ford S-Max? Ford S-Max dimensions explained

The Ford S-Max is a brilliantly practical family car – but how big is it exactly?

A blue Ford S-Max

A sleek seven-seater that doesn’t feel bulky, oversized, and outdated is often hard to come by.

Luckily, the Ford S-Max is the perfect example of an MPV with plenty of space and an elegant look. It’s ideal for large families or motorists who need extra room.

With a spacious boot, a comfortable cabin and ideal proportions, find out exactly how big the Ford S-Max measures up.

How long is a Ford S-Max?

The seven-seater Ford S-Max is an ideal model for getting extra space without feeling too bulky.

Measuring 4,796mm in length, you’ll easily be able to manoeuvre the S-Max without much trouble at all.

The overall width of the vehicle with the mirrors in their usual position is 2,137mm, and stands at 1,658mm high.

In comparison, the five-seater Ford Focus is 4,378mm long and 1,471mm tall. This means the S-Max gets an extra row of seats without growing too big.

Ford S-Max interior dimensions

The interior of the Ford S-Max is spacious, with plenty of head and legroom. You can use the car in the full seven-seat configuration or flatten the back row and use five seats with extra bootspace.

There are also three ISOFIX car seat points throughout the car.

  • Front headroom with glass roof: 1,022mm

  • Front headroom without glass roof: 996mm

  • Maximum front legroom: 1,081mm

  • Rear headroom with glass roof: 971mm

  • Rear headroom without glass roof: 952mm

  • Rear legroom: 1,046mm

  • Minimum ground clearance: 128mm

  • Wheelbase: 2,849mm

How big is the Ford S-Max boot?

Bootspace in the S-Max is seriously impressive when the rear seats are folded down, but it’s still more than enough for most motorists even with the full seven-seat set-up.

With all seats in place, there’s a 285-litre boot in the back that will easily fit a standard pushchair.

You can extend this space by dropping the rear seats and using the five-seat configuration, creating a 700-litre luggage capacity (or 1,035 litres when laden to the roof).

Even still, if you want to use the S-Max as a real transporter, you can use just the two front seats and get a loading space of up to 2,200 litres.

Weight

The weight of the Ford S-Max will depend on the exact model you choose, as weights do vary slightly across the range.

These weights are based on the kerb weight of the S-Max with a 75kg driver, full fluid levels, and 90% fuel levels.

Turning circle

The turning circle of a car is important to consider if you know you’re going to be manoeuvring around in tight areas.

Kerb to kerb, the S-Max turning circle measures in at 11.6m, meaning it won’t be too much of a pain to shift around in smaller spots.

How to tell if this model is for you

The Ford S-Max is a spacious MPV that ticks all boxes for practicality. A comfortable interior means it’s genuinely enjoyable to drive or be driven in, and the expandable bootspace is impressively versatile.

If you haven’t got your heart set on an SUV and aren’t committed to the high-riding aesthetic that’s currently on trend, the timeless S-Max would often be a much more practical option for most large families.

The lower ride also means you’re not overstretching to put in car seats.

There’s also some great hybrid tech on offer, boosting your fuel efficiency. This is a more recent option that allows you to cover short distances on only electric power, making it ideal for pootling around town.

You can achieve up to 54.3mpg in the 1.6 TDCi model, making the diesel options an economical choice too.

If you’re after a practical car that’s affordable to run and doesn’t have the tell-tale styling of an MPV, the S-Max could be your perfect family vehicle.
