Start nowThe Volvo C40 is identical to the XC40 Recharge (later EX40) in the front, both inside and outside, but it has a sloping rear roof which makes it a coupé-SUV. In 2024, it was renamed the EC40 to keep up with Volvo’s renewed naming strategy, but the car remained largely unchanged.
Popular Volvo C40 trims
Initially, there were no trim levels, but in 2023 Volvo introduced three options in line with the rest of Volvo’s cars.
> Volvo C40 Core - entry-level pick with cruise control, parking sensors, reversing camera and heated front seats
> Volvo C40 Plus - mid-spec model with heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and keyless entry
> Volvo C40 Ultimate - luxurious range-topper with 360-degree parking camera, upgraded sound system and more
Volvo C40 history
Volvo launched the C40 in 2021 and has since given it several updates, including introducing trim levels, new motor and battery configurations, and a new name.
> Volvo C40 (2021) - coupé version of the XC40 goes on sale, available as an electric crossover only
> Volvo C40 update (2022) - new, less powerful single-motor variant and introduction of Core, Plus and Ultimate trim levels
> Volvo C40 Apple CarPlay upgrade (2022) - free over-the-air software upgrade adds Apple CarPlay support
> Volvo C40 efficiency updates (2023) - battery, motor and tech improvements to add up to 24% more range
> Volvo EC40 (2024) - C40 becomes EC40 in line with Volvo’s new electric-centric naming strategy, plus minor revisions
Standard kit varies depending on when the C40 was built. As a guide, 2022 models following the trim level system include push-button start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a powered bootlid and a large nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system running smart Google-powered software.
C40 cars also get plenty of driver aids, such as bright LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and cruise control.
Mid- and high-spec cars add full keyless entry, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, powered front seats, adaptive cruise control, adaptive LED headlights and a 360-degree parking camera.
All models support up to 11kW charging speeds and 149-200kW rapid charging. And all C40s (except entry-level Core cars) have a heat pump, which helps to improve efficiency in colder weather.
Although it’s only a few years old, there’s not much to go wrong with the C40 because it’s electric and uses fewer moving parts.
Early customer reports have also been positive, and the C40 shares many parts with the XC40 Recharge, a tried-and-tested popular model that’s known for safety and reliability (as Volvos tend to be).
The efficiency of a used Volvo C40 is in line with other, similarly sized electric crossovers and SUVs. The less powerful version has a 69kWh battery and a range of around 300 miles, while the more powerful version gets around 340 miles of range from a bigger 82kWh battery.
Costs for a full charge can be as low as £5-6 with a cheap, off-peak rate (7p/kWh).
Just keep in mind that you might end up paying more than average in insurance because both models have quite a bit of power.
A used Volvo C40 for sale is a smart-looking crossover for those who need the extra space of an SUV without sacrificing style.
It’s also a premium, upmarket option with plenty of impressive tech and safety features, which makes it a sensible choice for families with young children.
The C40 is exactly the same width and length as the XC40, but it’s 66mm shorter thanks to its coupé design.
A Volvo C40 also has a smaller 489-litre boot space (56 litres less than the XC40 Recharge), but both have a handy 31-litre storage area under the bonnet, too.
Yes, the C40 (later renamed EC40) is an electric crossover. There are no petrol, diesel, mild hybrid or plug-in hybrid equivalents like with the XC40.
Volvo claims 302 miles of range is possible from the smaller battery, and 342 miles from the bigger battery. Earlier cars might have a reduced claimed figure.
Prices for new Volvo C40 cars fluctuate frequently according to company promotions, but the car will likely cost in excess of £50,000.
Thankfully, used Volvo C40 models are available for comfortably less than £30,000.
If you like the idea of a coupé-SUV that runs on electric, you may also wish to consider the Volkswagen ID.5, Skoda Enyaq Coupé, Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, BMW iX2 or Tesla Model Y.
