What is the Volkswagen Golf R-Line Edition?

Almost identical to the Golf R-Line, the Golf R-Line Edition is the highest-spec version of this car you can get before you enter the hot hatch territory of GTI and R models.

A used Golf R-Line Edition comes with all the style of these performance models, but more economical engine options that are still pretty punchy.

R-Line Edition was introduced with the facelifted Golf, sometimes called Mk7.5, in early 2017, which means you’ll be looking at more affordable previous-generation cars.

What are the Volkswagen Golf R-Line Edition specs?

Volkswagen didn’t sell the Golf R-Line Edition with its less powerful engine choices, so there’s no bad pick in this range.

Petrol power comes from a 150hp 1.4-litre petrol engine that can shut down two of its four cylinders when coasting to save fuel. Newer versions use a 1.5-litre engine with the same power output.

The most common diesel variant is a 150hp 2.0-litre engine, but you can occasionally find a 115hp 1.6-litre engine too.

The key benefits of going for a Golf R-Line Edition are the serious styling upgrades, such as the sporty bodykit, striking alloy wheel designs and front sports seats.

It’s also a very well-equipped model, so you get things like front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, interior ambient lighting and air-conditioning (or an easier-to-use climate control system in certain models).

Although the touchscreen infotainment system is a very good one, look out for models with the upgraded system, which uses an even bigger screen and has a few more features.

Where the Golf R-Line Edition sits in the Volkswagen range

R-Line Edition is a range-topping variant, sitting above the GT Edition car, which is another sporty-looking trim level.

More standard variants include entry-level S and mid-spec Match Edition, plus a fuel-efficient Match BlueMotion Edition car.

You can also pick from a few performance models, like the petrol-powered GTI and R, the diesel GTD, and the plug-in hybrid GTE, but they’re generally more expensive.
