What is the Volkswagen Golf GT?

A Volkswagen Golf GT is one of the highest trim levels you can get, but it looks far more subtle than the sporty GTI, GTD and GTE models.

Put simply, it combines the sporty looks of those models with the affordability of Volkswagen’s efficient petrol and diesel engines, meaning you shouldn’t notice a big jump in running costs like insurance.

Though it wasn’t available for as long as some other popular Volkswagen trim levels, GT was popular enough to be offered on a few other VW models for several years.

What are the Volkswagen Golf GT specs?

Depending on the model year, there are older 160hp 1.6-litre petrol engines and newer, more efficient 1.5-litre petrol engines with either 130hp or 150hp.

There are also 115hp 1.6-litre and 150hp 2.0-litre diesel variants, which should be able to achieve around 60mpg on long trips.

Though plug-in hybrid power was an option on the Golf, you’ll have to opt for GTE trim or, in the case of the latest eighth-generation model, one of Volkswagen’s newer trim levels.

A used Golf GT comes with much of the same equipment as lower-spec models, including adaptive cruise control and all-around parking sensors.

Upgrades that come with the GT include aerodynamic styling tweaks with black and chrome details on the exterior, tinted windows, and ambient interior lighting.

A Golf GT for sale also comes with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an upgraded sat-nav compared with lower models.

Where the Golf GT sits in the Volkswagen range

GT is a high trim level for the Volkswagen Golf, sitting just one step below the range-topping and sportier-looking R-Line.

Performance GTE, GTD, GTI, and R models sit at the top, but these come with more powerful engines and are considered to be hot hatches.

Beneath GT are mid-spec Match, lower-spec SE and SE Navigation, and entry-level S models.
