The Peugeot 308 is the French manufacturer’s answer to the humble family hatchback, but it gets some real French flair that makes it more interesting to look at than many of its safer-looking rivals.

The Peugeot 308 was first introduced in 2007 to replace the Peugeot 307. There have now been three versions of the 308, each with its own unique look. Here are some of the most popular Peugeot 308 generations:

A separately badged electric variant, the e-308, gets more equipment to justify its higher price tag, such as heated seats and a heated steering wheel.

It shares many of its mechanical parts, including its efficient engines, with the Vauxhall Astra and DS 4, along with a wide range of other Peugeot, Citroen, DS and Vauxhall models, so most parts are already tried and tested.

How much does the Peugeot 308 cost to run?

Whichever Peugeot 308 you decide to buy, it’s almost guaranteed to be about as efficient as this size of hatchback gets.

There are 1.2-litre petrols, with and without mild hybrid support, and a 1.5-litre diesel – they should all be able to exceed 40mpg on a long trip, and the mild hybrid can do around one-third to one-half of town journeys in electric mode from our experience.

For reduced running costs, consider one of the two plug-in hybrid variants or an electric model with a range of up to around 250 miles.
