History of GWM ORA

ORA, which stands for ‘open, reliable and alternative,’ launched in China as a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors (GWM) in 2018.

Having established itself with a selection of models in Asia, it launched in Europe, including the UK, in 2022 with the then-called Funky Cat.

An attractive alternative to cars like the MINI Cooper (with which it shares some parts), the 03 will be joined by the 07, a saloon-shaped electric car to take on the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal.

GWM ORA cars are exceptionally well kitted out for their money – they’ll often come with far more than similarly priced rivals.

Updated GWM ORA 03 cars come with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree parking camera, keyless entry and wireless phone charging.

Top-spec cars with the bigger battery add luxuries like heated and ventilated front seats with massage functionality, all-round parking sensors and a self-parking system.

Driving a GWM ORA

All GWM ORA cars sold in the UK are electric, so driving them is very easy because they use automatic gearboxes.

The 03 feels the same size as its rivals to drive, and the fact that rear parking sensors and a full array of cameras are included as standard makes light work of tricky town manoeuvres.

Charging is also easy because you have a Type 2 connector for use at home and a CCS port for rapid charging – they’re the most commonly used and accepted charger types.

Popular used GWM ORA cars

GWM ORA’s first car, the 03, is similar in size to the MINI Cooper and BYD Dolphin. It’s available in a few different configurations, with different names and battery packs depending on the model year.

Earlier cars were known as the GWM Funky Cat, and can be picked up for under £15,000.

Newer cars were rebranded as GWM ORA 03, but unless you’ve got your heart set on a nearly new vehicle, the Funky Cat comes with just as much kit so makes more sense from a budgeting point of view.
