Mercedes-Benz
E-Class
The E-Class has been on the market longer than many other models on the road, and it has proven to be one of the most popular time and time again, with every generation.
Modern models are very popular as taxis because of their copious amounts of storage space and interior luxury. This is a testament to the E-Class's incredible versatility and reliability – so not something to be sniffed at.
The E-Class's main rivals are the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF, but thanks to the excellent build quality of the Mercedes and high levels of comfort and luxury, it's often the favoured choice between the four.
This executive saloon has received many facelifts during its decades of production, each showcasing incremental yet important improvements.
Depending on the model year, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class will vary quite a lot inside due to Mercedes constantly trying to outdo its previous model years. However, this doesn’t mean an older model isn’t nice inside – you just might not get the same levels of interior technology as you would in a nearly-new model.
Speaking of which, modern variants of the E-Class feature the latest in Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system, which offers dual displays – one replacing the conventional driver’s gauge cluster, and the other being the centre display. This is one of the best systems found in a modern car, including the systems found in models from a few years ago that still look very up to date.
The E-Class boasts a large 540-litre boot that's larger than most of its competitors, making it ideal for loading suitcases or shopping bags.
Take a look at our Mercedes-Benz E-Class listings to see the full range of features with each car.
When it comes to engines, you are spoiled for choice with the E-Class. You get the choice of mild-hybrid petrol engines and some diesel engines.
But if you still want a diesel engine but with a little more power, there is the E400d – a much smoother and refined diesel engine that produces 335hp and will be the most enjoyable on longer journeys.
Up from there, you get a much more powerful petrol engine that produces 362hp and is very pleasant to drive, thanks to its mild-hybrid system and four-wheel drive capabilities.
However, if you want even more hybrid assistance then you should probably consider either the E300e or E300de plug-in hybrid models. These allow the E-Class to run in an all-electric mode, making it ideal for city driving.
Last but certainly not least is the range-topping E53 AMG model that's powered by a very powerful turbocharged V6 engine, which produces 435hp and will happily shred a set of tyres should it wish to.
Mercedes is known for making reliable cars, and the modern-day E-Class is no different. On top of that, it ranks highly among recognised consumer surveys.
The ‘E’ stands for Executive, because Mercedes pitches it as an executive saloon to compete with the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series.
It depends on what you want, but the E-Class is a more luxurious and refined version of the C-Class. Both are available in saloon and estate guises.
Some models feature all-wheel drive, and these are indicated by having 4Matic in the name.
The E-Class is absolutely a luxury vehicle, and sits below the very prestigious S-Class model and above the smaller C-Class.
