Hyundai INSTER buying guide
What types of used Hyundai INSTER cars are there?
The Hyundai INSTER is one of the company's newer models, and it was a brand-new offering to the UK instead of a new generation of something we've had before.
It took buyers by storm, with over 200 miles of range, seriously quirky looks and all the high-end tech and solid build quality you'd expect from Hyundai.
Popular Hyundai INSTER trims
Hyundai offers just two core trim levels for the INSTER, plus an off-road-inspired model with more unique looks.
> Hyundai INSTER 01 – entry-level model with reversing camera and rear parking sensors, a 10.25-inch touchscreen and keyless entry
> Hyundai INSTER 02 – this range-topper gets front parking sensors too, plus adaptive cruise control and heating for the front seats and steering wheel
> Hyundai INSTER Cross – an off-road-inspired model with bespoke 17-inch alloy wheels, distinct bumpers and other black plastic cladding
Hyundai INSTER history
This is new model for Hyundai, so it remains in its first generation.
> Hyundai INSTER (2025) – launch models kicked off with 01 and 02 trim levels, plus 42kWh and 49kWh battery options
> Hyundai INSTER Cross (2025) – just months later, this Cross model joined the lineup
What features does the Hyundai INSTER have?
It might be Hyundai's most affordable electric car, but being a Hyundai, it's loaded with features and tech borrowed from bigger, more expensive cars.
For example, i-Pedal one-pedal driving is available with the configuration regenerative braking, while vehicle-to-load (V2L) gives you up to 3.6kW of power for the most demanding of portable appliances. So that's the EV foundations more than covered.
Then inside, you've got twin 10.25-inch displays with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And for maximum practicality, whether that's carrying a surfboard to your favourite beach or a spot of car camping, the rear seats and even the passenger seat fold completely flat.
Is the Hyundai INSTER reliable?
The INSTER is still a new car, but it's built on solid foundations. Hyundai sells thousands of electrified cars annually in the UK, so it knows a thing or two about a high-voltage battery and building reliable motors.
Plus, a five-year/unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty provides extra reassurance, while many other rivals offer a shorter three-year warranty.
As for safety, it received a four-star Euro NCAP rating in 2025, which is pretty standard for small cars like this.
How much does the Hyundai INSTER cost to run?
It's not only one of the cheaper electric cars on the market, but it's also very efficient to run.
Hyundai sells the INSTER with 42kWh and 49kWh batteries, good for 203 or 229 miles of range per official testing. It means you'll likely be able to go a few days, or a week, before needing to top up.
We'd recommend topping up in small bursts each night, though, because this usually gives you access to the best off-peak energy rates.
Who is the Hyundai INSTER suitable for?
A used Hyundai INSTER makes the most sense for people living in towns and cities, who do shorter commutes or who may not need to commute by car at all.
The rear seat and boot flexibility make it perfect if you need to carry children in the back, too, so it's great for grandparents.
Another affordable option is the Dacia Spring, but for something a bit bigger you could consider a Renault 5 or a Citroën ë-C3.
Should I buy a used Hyundai INSTER?
What is the range of a Hyundai INSTER?
Both batteries have claimed ranges of 200+ miles, but the 49kWh battery will likely buy you around 20-30 more miles compared with the 42kWh option.
How long does a Hyundai INSTER take to charge?
10-80% is covered in 30 minutes thanks to 85kW DC charging at a suitable rapid charger, but we'd probably stick to using a cheaper home connection if you can. It's fitted with 11kW support as standard, but as most homes are limited to 7kW chargers, it'll take 6-7 hours to fully charge.
How big is the Hyundai INSTER?
At 3,825mm long, it's very short, but still longer than a Hyundai i10. It's also 1,575mm tall and 1,610mm wide (excluding its door mirrors).
How big is the Hyundai INSTER's boot?
You can choose to slide the rear seats forward or backward depending on whether you want to prioritise rear-seat space or boot space – there's 238 to 351 litres of room on offer.
Is the Hyundai INSTER a good first car?
The INSTER's compact dimensions, smooth electric drive, connected tech and driver aids make it an ideal car for younger drivers who are getting into electric motoring for the first time.
