Buy a used Ford Fiesta ST-Line X Edition and you’ll be limited to a 1.0-litre petrol engine, but that’s no bad thing, because we think this EcoBoost engine is one of the best small engines around.

You can have it in two flavours – 125hp and 155hp. The most powerful model can do 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds, so it feels spritely enough.

Unlike some lesser-powered versions of this EcoBoost engine available in lower trim levels, they benefit from mild hybrid technology to help improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
