The Fiat Tipo is one of the most versatile compact cars you can get, because as well as a standard family hatchback, you can also get an estate model and, less commonly, a saloon.

Being a Fiat, you can pick a Tipo up with a couple of punchy petrol engines or an extremely efficient diesel that should be able to exceed 60mpg on a motorway trip.

It’s an affordable family car that was on sale for around eight years, but in its later years, it got a major facelift and a slight re-brand with a new logo. This brought a lot more tech and standard equipment, so it’s the one to go for if your budget allows.

Fiat introduced the modern Tipo in 2015 before discontinuing it in the UK in 2023. It only ever saw one generation, but it had some updates

Entry-level cars come with all the basics, and a little more. For example, when it launched, the basic Easy model had air-con, Bluetooth and remote central locking, but only the estate version had electric rear windows.

Mid-spec Lounge models added improved climate control and a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and a reversing camera.

You can also get newer City Life and Life variants with similar levels of equipment, as well as a range-topping Cross model, which is generally sold as a separate car rather than just a trim level.

Is the Fiat Tipo reliable?

The Fiat Tipo shares some mechanical parts with the Fiat 500L and 500X, as well as the Jeep Renegade and Compass, so many components have already been tried and tested.

Fiat also belongs to a wider group of brands, including Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and Alfa Romeo, so it gets to use reliable parts without having to build its own.

How much does the Fiat Tipo cost to run?

Most models are sold with petrol engines – the 1.4 and 1.6-litre units are fine, but the turbocharged 1.0-litre motor is punchier and just as efficient.

The Tipo isn’t the biggest family car on the market, but it has enough space to comfortably fit a family and never feel cramped.  

The Tipo hatchback body style offers 440 litres of boot space, while the estate brings 550 litres. The estate model does feel a bit more spacious all round, thanks to the roomy cabin and classic shape.
