What is the BMW Z4 M Sport?

M Sport is one of the highest trim levels you can get on any BMW car, including used Z4 cars, and it represents a sweet spot in the range in terms of value for money.

The BMW Z4 M Sport has a more stylish bodykit compared to lesser-specced versions, but it still benefits from the German manufacturer’s range of efficient engines, unlike the company’s performance M cars, which can be costly to run.

Although it’s a car that primarily focuses on looks, there’s room for two adults to fit comfortably and a boot that’s big enough for a couple of carry-on cases, so it’s a great pick for a summer road trip.

What are the BMW Z4 M Sport specs?

Being a sporty model, engine choice is pretty limited, but you shouldn’t be disappointed with whichever variant you pick.

Many buyers opt for the 2.0-litre petrol, badged 20i, which has 197hp and is good for 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds. However, it should still be able to do between 30-40mpg in normal driving.

A more powerful 2.0-litre petrol, badged 30i, was also available, but BMW stopped selling this when it updated the Z4 in 2022. It has 258hp and a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds, but it should be nearly as efficient as the less powerful engine.

Used BMW Z4 M Sport features and equipment

All versions of the latest-generation 2019-onward BMW Z4 come with bright LED headlights, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a multifunction digital instrument cluster and a large touchscreen infotainment system.

Some M Sport-specific upgrades include a better sound system and a lot of styling tweaks, such as new alloy wheel designs, improved brakes (for the 30i engine only), and a stiffer suspension.

Being a BMW, a lot of optional extras were sold with the car from new, so it’s worth checking used listings to see what’s included. They can include a wind deflector, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, self-parking and a reversing camera, and adaptive headlights that adjust automatically to prevent blinding oncoming traffic.

Where the Z4 M Sport sits in the BMW range

In terms of the latest-generation BMW Z4, M Sport is the most popular trim, and the only one you can pick from new.

That’s unless you’re willing to go for the performance M40i model, which comes with a 340hp 3.0-litre engine and a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds.

Earlier models also had an entry-level Sport option, but there has never been a lower spec on offer, such as the SE trim that you get in other BMW models.
