Engine choice depends on which generation you pick, but generally, most buyers go for a 2.0-litre engine for its excellent blend of performance and economy.

Petrol power comes in the form of a 184hp engine, badged 318i, and it’s a good punchy option for anyone spending most of their time around town.

Long-distance drivers may want to consider one of the diesels – either the 150hp 318d or the 190hp 320d. Some newer cars also get mild hybrid technology to reduce emissions.

What you’ll get depends on lot on the model year you pick, but as a guide, the latest G20 cars built from 2018 include things like adaptive LED headlights, automatic lights and wipers, and cruise control.

Other staples include three-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and a really impressive touchscreen infotainment system.

There are also lots of optional extras to add, such as a powered boot lid, keyless entry, a heated steering wheel, heated seats and a head-up display.

The BMW 3 Series range is nice and simple, and as you can tell, even the most basic models come with plenty of equipment.

Mid-range Sport models add some subtle styling changes and more kit, while desirable M Sport cars have an even more aggressive-looking bodykit.

Besides those, your only other options in the case of the seventh-generation car are the performance versions, such as the M340i and M340d models, and the very fast (and expensive) M3.
