What two-seater cars are there?

There are a few different two-seater cars you need to know about, and these include: 

> Sports cars – fun-to-drive and nippy cars that offer huge levels of enjoyment 

> Convertible cars – best enjoyed in the summer months, these are brilliant for feeling the wind in your hair 

> Coupés – often, two-seater coupés are sports cars or versions of convertibles without the roof chopped off – they have swooping, sporty rooflines

> Hot hatches – not all, but some hot hatches come with just two seats, and these tend to be the high-end performance models where the rear seats are replaced with roll cages

> Micro cars – a small, lightweight city car that’s powered by a small engine or electric motor 

Popular two-seater cars

There are loads of popular two-seater cars on offer, including different body styles. 

If you’re after a sports car, a used Porsche Cayman is hard to ignore, bringing a screaming flat-six engine, a manual or automatic ‘PDK’ gearbox and great levels of tech.  

While the Boxster is a great convertible to consider, so is a used BMW Z4 or Mazda MX-5, which bring driving back to basics with nimble handling and sporty looks. 

There may not be as many two-seater hatchbacks, but models such as the Abarth 595 and MINI JCW GP offer rapid pocket rocket-like power for less. 

Then last but not least, there are 'micro cars' such as the smart fortwo or the tiny Citroën Ami, which make getting around the city a breeze and are a doddle to park.

What are two-seater cars like to drive?

It depends on which body style you have because a micro car is going to be very different to drive to a convertible sports car, but on the whole, they’re just as easy to drive as any other car. 

With the choice of either a manual or automatic gearbox, they can suit different people’s lifestyles. 

Cabin features will vary massively depending on the model, trim and spec, but thankfully, a highly-specced used car is a often far better value than when it was new. 

Two-seater vs. four-seater cars

They’re for different kinds of people. You should consider a two-seater car if you don’t need to carry more people around, if you have a second car with more seats or if you just want to enjoy driving a nippy sports car. 

Most people will default to a four-seater car but most of the time, a two-seater car would do the job. 

Want something in between? Why not consider a 2+2 like a Porsche 911 or Audi TT? They're still sporty but have rear seats if you need them (although mostly only in a pinch because space is a bit limited back there).

A used two-seater car is well-suited to someone who has a second car with more seats or who doesn’t need any more seats and can enjoy the thrill of driving something small and quick.

If you want a two-seater with the most space, your best bet is to find one that has clever storage solutions. Or something mid-engined like the Porsche Cayman, which has a small 'froot' (front boot) as well as its normal boot.

Plenty of sports cars and coupés, such as the Audi TT and BMW 4 Series, have four seats (also called a '2+2'), but the rear seats are quite tight and sometimes better for storage than passengers.
