What are the different Range Rover Evoque generations, and which one is best?

The Range Rover Evoque is a British-designed masterpiece, bridging the gap between common crossovers and more premium SUVs with a stylish design, tremendous badge appeal and a splash of heritage.

Hitting the ground running when it launched in 2011, Victoria Beckham collaborated with Land Rover to launch a fashion-forward version, but we’re here to discuss mainstream Range Rover Evoque generations, of which there have been two.

Here’s everything you need to know about the generations of Range Rover Evoque.

First-generation Range Rover Evoque (L538) 2011-2016

Heavily inspired by the ‘LRX’ concept, the Range Rover Evoque was something totally new when it launched – it added a premium layer on top of the crossover market, and it made Range Rovers more affordable.

A mix of petrol and diesel, front- and four-wheel drive, and automatic and manual were available, making it one of the most diverse in its class.

Better still, it wasn’t just a five-door SUV. There was also a three-door coupé version available for the style-conscious.

This was a much-needed mid-cycle update, not just including styling changes and an improved infotainment system, but also adding significantly smoother and more efficient engines.

And if the coupé model wasn't stylish enough for you, Land Rover also added a convertible model. There really aren’t many others like this at all short of the VW T-Roc Cabriolet, so it’s a true rarity.

The Evoque also got a better drive with this update, from enhanced chassis and suspension tuning and a more modern nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Second-generation Range Rover Evoque (L551) 2019-2021

The fundamentals remain totally unchanged, and the second generation is as recognisable as the first. It’s just cleaner, smarter and more polished. The coupé and convertible also got dropped for simplicity.

Some of the upgrades include flush, pop-out door handles, mild hybrid powertrains and a new plug-in hybrid option.

Land Rover’s new infotainment system is the biggest upgrade, though. It’s easier to use, far less laggy, and has all the smartphone connectivity and vehicle controls you'd expect in a premium product.

This was a fairly small update, tweaking some of the interior and exterior details to bring the Evoque more in line with its larger siblings.

In 2024, another update added a new 11.4-inch touchscreen and a more minimalist interior.

What’s the best Range Rover Evoque generation?

Both generations have their own merits – the first is generally cheaper to buy, and the second is by far the most hi-tech.

If you’re buying a first-generation Range Rover Evoque, we recommend looking for updated post-2016 models for their cheaper running costs and improved fit and finish.

Any second-generation Evoque will be great, but be aware that trim levels (and therefore standard equipment) changes fairly frequently.
