What are the differences between the Audi A1 generations?

Understanding Audi A1 generations is easy. We already know it’s being discontinued as of 2026 as the brand pivots toward electrification.

So, all there is to know, is that there have been two generations on sale, each getting smaller updates along the way, but with the first generation getting a more notable mid-cycle update.

Here’s the low-down on all things Audi A1 generations, including which Audi A1 generation is best.

First-generation Audi A1 (2010-2014)

Audi’s bigger A3 hatchback was already a heavy-hitter, but the premium German marque knew there would be demand for a smaller hatchback. And the building blocks were already there – the A1 is mechanically similar to the VW Polo.

It launched as a three-door Hatchback, with a five-door Sportback coming around a year later.

Popular engine choices included 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre TFSI petrols and a 1.6-litre TDI diesel.

Audi had already struck a balance between the more affordable DS 3 and the equally premium MINI Hatchback, so this update was all about making the A1 even smarter.

It got a redesigned front end with new bumpers and updated headlights, and a similar treatment for the back. Inside was also updated with more equipment.

The popular 1.0-litre TFSI petrol also launched with this update, replacing the older 1.2.

Second-generation Audi A1 (2018-2026)

Now only sold as a five-door Sportback model, the three-door Hatchback got cut from the lineup.

Though the exterior design is far smarter and more premium, the biggest upgrade comes inside with dual displays, smartphone mirroring (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) and better-quality materials.

Diesel was also cut with this new A1, but efficient 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre TFSI petrols offer a good balance of performance and economy.

Special edition Audi A1 models

Audi A1 quattro (2012) – this ultra-rare hot hatch (333 cars globally, 19 in the UK) uses a 256hp 2.0-litre petrol engine, a six-speed manual gearbox and ‘quattro’ four-wheel drive to get from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds

Audi S1 quattro (2014-2018) – technically the A1’s hot hatch sibling, it’s actually less powerful than the super-limited A1 quattro above, with 231hp and a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds, but it’s more readily available

What’s the best Audi A1 generation?

Both generations are extremely popular, but we would suggest you refine your search to second-generation models.

They’re a huge upgrade over their predecessors, with much more in-car tech for an easy drive. Plus, the newer petrol engines are great on fuel, and you can choose between manual or smooth-shifting ‘S tronic’ automatic gearboxes.

Mid-spec Sport trim offers exceptional value for money, but high-spec S line models are also readily available for not much more.

You get the upmarket badge appeal, solid build quality, strong-performing engines and lots of tech, but the price tag might surprise you in a good way.
