What types of used Volkswagen Touran cars are there?

Once upon a time, MPVs used to be the de facto choice for family cars. The Touran, like many of its rivals, offers seven spacious seats, a good-sized boot and plenty of family-friendly features.

It was the smaller of the two Volkswagen people carriers that were available for many years, offering a pair of seats in the boot for occasional use and two conventional rear doors – unlike the larger Sharan, which has sliding rear doors.

Volkswagen Touran history

Volkswagen introduced the Touran in 2003 as a smaller alternative to the Sharan. By 2015, it had entered its second generation. Besides some minor updates, the Touran really hasn’t changed a lot.

What features does the Volkswagen Touran have?

Volkswagen is known for kitting out its cars, and even the entry-level Touran SE Family is a great place to start.

Depending on model year, expect a sat-nav with smartphone connectivity and digital radio, an eight-inch digital driver’s display, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control and all-round parking sensors.

Match is the true sweat spot in the range – it adds matrix LED headlights that adapt automatically to prevent blinding oncoming traffic, a powered boot lid, keyless entry, heated front seats and a reversing camera.

Upgrade even further and you get some minor changes, like a bigger digital driver’s display with customisable mapping, but most of the changes are more cosmetic.

Is the Volkswagen Touran reliable?

The Volkswagen Touran has been around for more than two decades as two generations, so it’s a truly tried and tested family MPV.

It shares mechanical parts with the Golf SV, which is a smaller five-seater MPV, as well as the Golf, Passat and Arteon.

How much does the Volkswagen Touran cost to run?

Some of the most popular engines offer around 150hp – there’s a 1.5-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel.

They’re generally the most economical, and should be able to return around 40mpg and 50mpg respectively.

Equally as important to a family will be that dreaded expense – insurance. You can pick up a Touran in group 9, and even the most expensive will be in the early 20s, which generally means premiums will be reasonable.
