MINI Convertible buying guide
What types of used MINI Convertible cars are there?
A used MINI Convertible offers the perfect balance between elegance and sportiness, and it feels impressive out on the road.
You’ll get a choice of engines, trims, and some extra personalisation to build your perfect model, but all of the options are excellent quality.
We especially love the Cooper Convertible for something classic, but the John Cooper Works model is ideal for some extra power.
You’ll benefit from the tried-and-tested BMW-backed MINI manufacturing that has kept the brand popular for so long, so you know you’re getting a reliable car.
Even the interior of the Convertible is superb – you get that instantly recognisable MINI dashboard, plush seating and – of course – the ability to drop the roof.
Popular MINI Convertible trims
A used MINI Convertible can be had in a variety of trims to get you on your way to your dream drop-top hatchback.
> MINI Convertible Cooper – the Cooper base model with cruise control, heated mirrors and the option of air-con, leather seats, sat-nav and more
> MINI Convertible Cooper S – enjoy a sportier ride in the Cooper S – the logical next step up the range before you reach the true performance model
> MINI Convertible John Cooper Works (JCW) – the best of the best and sportiest Mini JCW model you can get to really feel the wind in your hair
MINI Convertible history
The MINI Hatch has been available as a convertible from the get-go, and has been a popular choice for buyers in warmer climates or brave Brits.
> First-generation MINI Convertible (2004-2008) - the rebirth of the iconic Mini hatchback, and having a convertible version opened up more possibilities for buyers
> Second-generation MINI Convertible (2009-2015) - a slight design change and more trim levels gave buyers more choices
> Third-generation MINI Convertible (2015-present) - the one you might be most familiar with, offering modern day tech and more comfort
What features does the MINI Convertible have?
There are a fair few models in the MINI Convertible range, and each gets its own unique range of features – it’s a good idea to browse the collection and see what takes your fancy.
The Cooper Convertible in Classic trim is entry-level, but you’ll still get loads of brilliant touches, like a fully electric soft-top that opens in 18 seconds, an 8.8-inch colour touchscreen, MINI Connected and remote services and front and rear LED lights.
The Cooper Convertible S in the Resolute trim is up there with the flashiest of the newest models.
It usually offers all the standard stuff, as well as extras like exclusive Resolute Bronze design elements and foil finish on the dashboard and piano black styling touches.
You can see the full range of features available in each model by checking out our current used MINI Convertible listings.
Is the MINI Convertible reliable?
A used MINI Convertible is obviously based on the existing MINI Hatch, so reliability levels are strong, making it a very dependable car to live with.
Thanks to its BMW-backing, MINIs of the last 20 years have been far better than ever before.
How much does the MINI Convertible cost to run?
How your used MINI Convertible feels to drive will depend on the model you pick, but you can be certain that it will always be a superb experience.
The handling on the Convertible is agile and sharp, and you’ll be guaranteed good performance.
The suspension is comfortable too and does a great job of providing a smooth drive.
There are a number of options for engines, including an impressive 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol from the latest Convertible John Cooper model.
That one puts out 231hp and feels particularly nippy when you’re behind the wheel.
There’s also a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 136hp, which is perfect for an entry-level model that’s ideal for everyday use.
That one still gives you a good pull on the roads and settles into a casual cruise with ease.
Who is the MINI Convertible suitable for?
A used MINI Convertible is really the best of both worlds.
Not only do you get a solid hatchback, but you can also pop the roof down whenever you want. If this appeals to you, this is probably the car for you.
Rivals include the Fiat 500 Cabrio, VW T-Roc Cabriolet and DS 3 Cabrio.
