What is the BMW M5?

M-branded cars are BMW’s most serious performance models, and the M5 is one of the most integral models for the BMW lineup.

There have been M5 models for four decades, and power outputs have increased since the E28 M5 of 1984, which was based on the second-generation 5 Series.

Today, there are performance electric versions sold under the i5 name, but nothing comes close to the excitement of BMW’s V8 engines.

What are the BMW M5 specs?

The latest-generation BMW M5 F90, introduced in 2017, comes with a 4.4-litre V8. It produces 625hp and 750Nm of torque, which means it’ll go from 0-62mph in an eye-watering 3.3 seconds.

The latest version has a specially-tuned xDrive four-wheel-drive system, which allows the driver to pick from two 4x4 configurations and a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

The new eighth-generation 5 Series G60 is yet to have an M5 variant introduced, but its electric equivalent, the i5 M60, comes with 601hp and a 3.8-second 0-62mph time.

Used BMW M5 features and equipment

The BMW M5 is a step above regular versions of the 5 Series, including the 5 Series M Sport, so it comes loaded with car tech and equipment.

Because there are no trim levels, every M5 comes with a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster and a seriously aggressive bodykit.

BMW introduced several updates over the years, so check any individual listing to be sure it comes with what you want.

Where the M5 sits in the BMW range

While the M5 is powerful, there’s an even more powerful 635hp M5 CS available, which is 0.3 seconds quicker to 62mph. It’s a lot rarer and costs more, but it has a lot of appeal.

There’s also an extremely powerful M550i model, which has a similar amount of power to the M5 but is slightly slower to accelerate to 62mph. It’s still a lot quicker than any hot hatch.

Beneath those are regular SE, Sport, and M Sport variants of the 5 Series, with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid engine options.
