What is the BMW 1 Series M140i?

M-branded cars are BMW’s performance models, and while there may not be a full M version of the 1 Series, the M140i packs a punch.

It belongs to the second-generation F20 car, which means it appeals to enthusiasts more than even the latest model because it’s the last 1 Series to be fitted with a rear-wheel-drive setup.

The M140i is also the last mainstream 1 Series to get a 3.0-litre engine because the newer performance models come with a tamer 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit. All of this makes a used BMW M140i an extremely desirable proposition.

What are the BMW 1 Series M140i specs?

M140i refers to two things – it’s a trim level, but it’s also a performance variant, which means you’re limited to the one, very powerful petrol engine.

It’s a 3.0-litre straight-six unit with 340hp and 500Nm of torque, which gives the car a seriously quick 4.8-second 0-62mph time. Models fitted with the smooth automatic gearbox have an even quicker 4.6-second sprint time.

Representing the sweet spot in BMW hot hatch ownership, it's quicker than the 320hp M135i model that it replaces, which also has a 3.0-litre engine but a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds.

It's also quicker than the third-generation F40 M135i xDrive, which has a 306hp 2.0-litre engine and a sprint time of 4.8 seconds.

Used BMW 1 Series M140i features and equipment

Besides having a more powerful engine, M140i cars also get a sporty makeover with more aggressive styling including large air intakes and distinctive exhaust pipes.

Standard spec is similar to M Sport models, so expect things like parking sensors, cruise control, dual-zone climate control and heated front seats.

Despite being a high-spec model, there are some optional extras worth keeping your eye out for, including adaptive suspension, keyless entry, an opening sunroof, adaptive LED headlights and an upgraded infotainment system.

Where the 1 Series M140i sits in the BMW range

There’s no such car as an M1 – unlike the 3 Series, which has a performance M3 variant – which means the M140i is the quickest model you can buy.

There were M140i Shadow Edition cars available, too, which had darker and more aggressive styling, but very little in terms of extra kit.

Most buyers tend to go for a 1 Series M Sport model, which has all of the appealing styling but more efficient engine options, including petrol and diesel power.

Mid-spec Sport models are also common, and entry-level SE cars still give you a feeling of quality for a more affordable price.
