Kia has made a big statement in the competitive world of family SUVs, with the all-new Niro. If it's bold design and futuristic interior hadn't already grabbed your attention, its starting price of £27,745 may well do. Because despite being among the cheaper models of its class, Kia's upgraded Niro shows clear intent of moving the model upmarket.

The Kia Niro will be available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and as a fully electric car. Allowing you to either dip your toe into the electric world or dive in headfirst. The entry level is called the '2' - with the hybrid version priced at £27,745 and plug-in hybrid at £32,775. Kia's Niro Electric starts from £34,995, which seems fair.

Despite the '2' being the entry level on paper, you're treated to a decent list of accessories. This trim comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and an eight-inch touchscreen with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This model also features LED lights, a reversing camera and cruise control. But if that's not enough, then you will be eyeing up the '3', which takes things up a notch.

The '3' starts from £30,495 for the hybrid and £35,525 for the plug in hybrid and they come with heated seats and steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, a wireless phone charger and plus a huge 10-inch central touchscreen which has in-built sat nav. So for those seeking a little more luxury, this is one for you. But for those looking to go one better, there's the '4'. Sitting at the top of the range, starting at £40,495 - this comes with a 10.25-inch drivers display, Harmon/Kardon sound system, heated rear seats, head-up display and memory seats for the driver. We feel snug just thinking of heated memory seats. All the hybrid and plug-in options will have a 1.6-litre petrol engine, but the plug-in will deliver 182hp while the hybrid with a smaller electric motor will have 141hp.

Moving onto the Niro Electric, bear in mind you cannot benefit from the government's £1,500 low-emission vehicle grant. The entry level EV, known as the 'Electric 2' comes with 17-inch wheels, reversing camera, an 8-inch touchscreen and a 10.25 drivers display. Both electric versions have an 11kW charging and can be charged from 10-80% in as little as 45 minutes - with 287 miles of range on a full charge, according to Kia. The 64.8kWh battery will give you 204hp, with a 0-62mph time of 7.8sec - making this a nippy electric SUV!

Brits can pre-order the new Kia Niro now but you will be expected to wait until Autumn for the deliveries. But if you can't wait, at the time of writing, you can get your hands on a Kia Niro for under £18,000 in cinch's online showroom.
