Ford Mustang Mach-E – cinch Weekend Wheels

Look what’s just landed in the biggest range of cars to buy entirely online...

article hero

While traditionalists weren’t particularly happy about Ford’s decision to name an electric SUV after the company’s legendary sports car, the Mustang, there’s no denying that the car itself is absolutely brilliant. The Mustang Mach-E, as it’s called, goes more than badge deep in borrowing the name, too, with lights and a swooping bonnet mimicking those of the petrol-powered sports car. Applied to an SUV body, the results are surprisingly cohesive, especially in the metal – and thankfully, the car’s performance also does no harm to its Mustang credentials either.

This is a hot SUV that uses a battery-electric powertrain, producing – in the specification of the car that’s just arrived in our digital showroom, our first Mach-E – 294hp from a rear-mounted electric motor. That means this Mustang Mach-E stays even truer to Ford’s iconic sports car, because it powers the rear wheels only. Not only that, but it can accelerate from 0-62mph in seven seconds dead, while eking out a claimed 379 miles between charges, if you drive economically. That’s very competitive.

With plenty of space aboard this large SUV – it’s a tiny bit larger overall than a Nissan X-Trail – and a massive, and we mean massive, infotainment screen, there’s plenty to keep passengers happy on weekend trips away. Five adults could happily sit aboard the Mustang Mach-E for extended periods and be perfectly comfortable, with their luggage stowed in the generously-sized boot. Want to show off? If the infotainment, complete with its floating rotary dial, isn’t enough, the code-activated door lock system ought to do the job, should you choose to use the exterior keypad on the driver’s door.

Even more useful are the Mustang Mach-E’s fast-charge capabilities, with some plugs capable of injecting the 98.7kWh battery with 200 miles of extra range in about 43 minutes. Not bad at all. It means you could have the car primed and ready to roll for the next leg of the journey in about the same time as a coffee and lunch stop at the services. And with only 2,119 miles on the clock, this particular Mustang Mach-E is as ready for an upcoming winter or spring getaway as it can be. For £53,995 – or the equivalent monthly rate – it could be outside your front door or ready to collect in as little as one week.

Performance and range claims are based on OEM data at the model’s release.
