Why are modern cars fitted with a start/stop system?

A start-stop (or stop-start) system automatically shuts down and restarts a car’s engine in order to reduce the amount of time it spends idling. This is great for reducing fuel consumption and emissions, making the car more efficient. It’s particularly useful for cars that are used in slow-moving and congested city roads.
