What does the Isofix system in a car do?

Isofix is a system for attaching child car-seats. Metal anchor points are built in to the chassis of the car, allowing the car seat to simply click onto them. Some car seats have Isofix connectors as part of the seat itself, but others require a separate Isofix base that is installed into the car, with the seat then fitting in to that.
