Mercedes A-Class generations

A run-through of the Mercedes A-Class generations from 1997 to the present day

The Mercedes A-Class is a very important car for the German brand. Not only was it its first venture into the supermini market, but it also signified a change in direction to compete in this segment with much greater practicality.

Since 1997, Mercedes has sold more than 3.3 million of them, making it a bit of a success story, and a worthy alternative to a BMW 1 Series or Audi A3.

Full list of Mercedes A-Class generations

First-generation Mercedes A-Class (W168) 1997-2004

It may have been small, but it was far from a cheap exercise. In fact, Mercedes lost around £1,000 per car across the first 1.1 million models sold. That shows true commitment and belief in this plucky car.

This first model became infamous for its failed moose test (testing quick turning to avoid an obstruction in the road), which was soon rectified in a recall, adding electronic stability control and modified suspension.

Second-generation Mercedes A-Class (W169) 2004-2012

There were a remarkable seven engine options available on this generation, including a range of gearbox choices, including manual and a CVT.

Mercedes wanted to sell 50,000 units during its first year, and to its surprise, they had already reached this before cars hit showrooms.

Mercedes also added the optional Active Park Assist, enabling the car to parallel park itself. Pretty advanced for the time.

Third-generation Mercedes A-Class (W176) 2012-2018

It was a radical overhaul of the previous design, and proved an instant success, with buyers favouring the styling and tech.

Fourth-generation Mercedes A-Class (W177) 2018-2026

It’s popular for its luxurious interior, strong selection of engines and upmarket styling.

Sadly, Mercedes has now discontinued the A-Class, saying it will not live beyond 2026. No replacement has been confirmed, and we suspect this is due to growing demand in the SUV and EV segments.

What’s the best Mercedes A-Class generation?

This completely depends on what you’re after, though the first two generations are getting on a bit now, so you may want to look towards the newer versions.

The latest A-Class from 2018 is by far the most comfortable, luxurious inside and efficient of the bunch.

It’s got everything a modern car should have, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, heated seats, efficient petrol and diesel engines, and so much more.
