We explain what the JAECOO 7 towing capacity is, and what you can tow

JAECOO 7 driving

How much can the JAECOO 7 tow?

The JAECOO 7 is one of Britain’s best-selling cars, and there’s no wonder why.

It’s a well-rounded SUV with plenty of appeal, such as its eye-catching design and exceptional value for money.

But being an SUV, you’d expect it to be able to handle some SUV things – many owners want to tow, whether it’s for a holiday or just a trip to the tip.

In this guide, we answer ‘can a JAECOO 7 tow a caravan?’ and more.

JAECOO 7 official towing capacity

Both versions of the JAECOO 7 – the petrol model and the Super Hybrid System (PHEV) – are rated to tow a braked trailer of up to 1,500kg.

Engine and drivetrain impact

Ultimately, going for the JAECOO 7 SHS (plug-in hybrid) is the better choice for towing, because it has the most power so it can deal with the weight better.

You probably won’t see the benefits of the Super Hybrid System’s superior fuel economy when you’ve got a trailer hitched to the back because the car could be pulling a weight not too far off the JAECOO 7 itself.

But most of the time, you won’t be towing. And that’s where the 56-mile electric-only range comes to its own. Finally, a tow car that doesn’t break the bank to buy or run.

Petrol and plug-in hybrid models both use automatic gearboxes, so at least the car can balance pulling off for you rather than you having to operate the clutch, which can become tiresome in traffic.

Higher-spec petrols and the SHS model both come with all-wheel drive for added grip. This isn’t just useful in the snow or mud, it’s a nice-to-have in any towing scenario.

Towing isn’t just limited to trailers, caravans and boats.

You might also want a tow bar fitted to put a rear-mounted bike rack on your J7.

Many drivers prefer this because it can be more aerodynamic than putting them on the roof and you won’t be limited by low bridges, not to mention it’s easier not to have to lift bikes overhead.

Remember that there are two different types of electrical connection – the 13-pin socket is common with caravans with more advanced lighting and electronics, but the seven-pin socket is still popular with simpler trailers.

How to tow safely

Safe towing principles are the same regardless of the type of car you have, but above all else, you should always adhere to manufacturer guidance when it comes to weights.

For example, keeping heavy items centred over the trailer’s axle will prevent an unnecessarily heavy nose weight (or excess weight at the back).

Keeping items low and central, and this applies to side-to-side too, will prevent the trailer from wobbling. Not only will this be more comfortable, but considerably safer.

Other top tips include:

  • Accelerate gently to conserve fuel

  • Allow longer braking distances

  • Take corners extra wide

  • Make sure you’re within your driving licence’s limitations

  • Keep to trailer speed limits, which are different from car speed limits
