How fuel efficient are Abarth cars? Abarth economy explained

Abarth models are great for style and performance – but how efficient are they when it comes to fuel?

What is fuel efficiency?

Fuel efficiency is how we describe the amount of fuel that vehicles use per journey.

Cars with good fuel efficiency use less fuel over higher mileage, while low efficiency cars need to be refuelled more regularly.

Efficiency differs depending on the vehicle, with hybrid cars offering the most mileage per tank thanks to the help of an electric battery and motor.

Driving technique can also have an impact – you'll use more fuel if you’re thrashing around at top speeds regularly.

Abarth models offer great fuel efficiency for a hot hatchback with plenty of power. They aren’t the most economical car on the market – and they weren’t designed to be – but they still won’t cost a fortune to run.

In the UK, fuel efficiency is measured with miles per gallon (MPG) figures that assess how much fuel you use over a certain distance of miles.

How does Abarth ensure fuel efficiency in its cars?

Abarth models are performance-focused and prioritise acceleration and refined handling.

Compared with models like the Fiat 500, you’ll likely see reduced fuel efficiency. You’ll need to consider whether you really want a hot hatch or an economical city car.

There’s an all-electric Abarth 500e on the market if you want to ditch fuel entirely, but standard fuel-powered models can still be suitable for most motorists.

Manufacturers like Abarth can also take measures to improve the efficiency and overall performance during the building process.

Choosing lightweight materials helps reduce fuel consumption and makes for a more economical drive.

You can also reduce fuel consumption in your Abarth by ensuring your tyres are always properly pumped up and by ditching any extra luggage.

Added weight from roof racks or extra bulk in the boot can negatively affect fuel economy.

Maintaining a steady drive with appropriate speeds and braking that’s not too aggressive can also help.

How can I measure my Abarth's fuel efficiency?

Most modern cars like Abarths have a trip computer that will let you know how you’re doing with fuel efficiency.

This is usually shown in a miles per gallon figure, so you know how much fuel you’re using per trip.

On our website, we also list the MPG figure of our Abarth models in the ‘running costs’ section when you view a model.

If you’d like to calculate the fuel efficiency of your Abarth manually, you can follow a few easy steps:

  1. When you fill up your fuel tank, take the number of litres it took to fill up your tank and multiply this by 0.219 to convert the number into gallons

  2. Subtract your starting mileage from your final mileage figure

  3. Divide the number of miles covered by the gallon figure to work out your MPG

Most efficient Abarth models

The most efficient Abarth on the market is the new all-electric model, offering up to 164 miles of range on a single charge using a 42kWh battery.

If you’re not ready to ditch fuel, the Abarth 695 is a peppy performance hatchback that offers up to 45.6mpg – an impressive figure for a car that offers a 0-62mph sprint in just 5.9 seconds.

The Abarth 595 model provides up to 48.7mpg – that’s from the 1.4 T-Jet 190, 160 Auto, and 140 Auto setups. It also offers 180hp, so you get plenty of power within that mileage.

For something really sporty, the Abarth 124 Spider is a convertible option and offers up to 44.1mpg, so still economical for daily use. It’s a lot of fun to drive too, and road tax isn’t too pricey either.
