What is the Volkswagen Beetle Dune?

Volkswagen sold the Beetle Dune between 2014 and 2016 before the entire car went off sale in 2019 after around eight decades.

There’s no real off-road ability, but the raised ride height, flared wheelarches and plastic trim all add to the dune buggy vibe.

You’ll spot one of these from a mile off, and it doesn’t take a petrolhead to recognise a Beetle Dune because it’s covered in gold paint and even has gold alloy wheels in certain configurations. Other colours were available, however.

What are the Volkswagen Beetle Dune specs?

Volkswagen is known for building efficient and reliable engines, and the 150hp 2.0-litre diesel unit ticks those boxes.

Many town drivers will prefer to go for the 1.2-litre petrol, though its 105hp output does make it considerably less powerful than the diesel.

Both came as standard with manual gearboxes, however the smooth-shifting dual-clutch automatic is a worthwhile upgrade if you do a lot of driving.

To help the Beetle Dune stand out, a golden yellow and a darker bronze paint were both introduced, but they’re also available with more regular colour options.

A used Beetle Dune mainly focuses on style, so gets things like a honeycomb lower grille section, a sporty rear diffuser, LED taillights and yellow details on the inside.

Some of the kit includes front and rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Keep an eye out for optional extras like keyless entry, heated front seats and cruise control.

Where the Beetle Dune sits in the Volkswagen range

Considered somewhat of a special edition, the Dune was the most expensive variant you could buy at the time.

It’s based on the Beetle Design, which is a mid-spec model. There’s also an entry-level car to consider, which is just called Beetle.

An appealing R-Line model was also offered, which came with more equipment than the Dune at a similar price point. It’s a popular pick and worth considering.
