How much does the Volvo V40 cost to run?

The 2.0L diesel is the most economical Volvo V40 to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency.

The Volvo V40 2.0L diesel is free to tax, as it sits in tax band A.

It does just over 84 MPG on average, which means it will cost £7.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Peugeot 308 1.6L diesel and the more thirsty Citroen C4 2.0L diesel.

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 17, which is lower than the Audi A3 1.9L diesel, but higher than the Mercedes Benz A Class 2.0L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Honda Civic has the lowest insurance group.)

Volvo V40: How big is the boot?

The Volvo V40 has a below average boot space (399 litres of luggage with the seats up).

This would allow one pushchair and 2 large bags. Alternatively you could load up with 3 large bags or 3 cabin bags instead.

Worth knowing, the Peugeot 308 estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 5 large bags with its 810 litres.

Is the Volvo V40 easy to park?

Given a typical supermarket space, the V40 is hard to park. (If you want the detail it will fill three quarters of the bay). This is the widest car in the Small Family class, and you may need to breathe in a bit when getting in and out.

If you don’t park in the street that much, then the V40 is fine. It will go in to an average street slot, giving you a gap of 431mm to swing in and out. But if you street park a lot you may want to look at the Suzuki Baleno.

Which Volvo V40 has the best performance?

The fastest Volvo V40 from 0-60, is the 2.5L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 360 lbs/ft torque and 254 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.7L petrol, which will beat your Volvo V40 to 60 by 0.1 seconds. That’s a big gap in Formula 1, but not something you would notice in your commute to work.

What size caravan or trailer, can the Volvo V40 tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the Volvo V40 2.0L diesel which has 440 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 1500kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
