How much does the Volkswagen Passat cost to run?

The 1.6L diesel is the most economical Volkswagen Passat to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency.

The Volkswagen Passat 1.6L diesel is free to tax, as it sits in tax band A.

It does just over 76 MPG on average, which means it will cost £8.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Dacia Logan 1.5L diesel and the more thirsty Ford Mondeo 1.5L diesel.

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 15, which is lower than the Ford Mondeo 1.5L diesel, but higher than the Hyundai I40 1.7L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Dacia Logan has the lowest insurance group.)

Volkswagen Passat: How big is the boot?

The Volkswagen Passat estate has a bigger boot than the saloon (it can hold 600 litres of luggage with the seats up).

This allows the estate to take one pushchair and 4 large bags or 5 large bags. While the saloon takes just 4 large bags.

Worth knowing, the Skoda Superb estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 4 large bags with its 644 litres.

Is the Volkswagen Passat easy to park?

While not the absolute narrowest car (that is the Dacia Logan), this is in the top third for ease of parking in car parks. Given a typical supermarket space, it will fill three quarters of the space.

If you park on the street regularly, this is one of the cars to shortlist. At 4768m long it gives you reasonable 32mm space to move the car in and out of the bay.

Which Volkswagen Passat has the best performance?

The fastest Volkswagen Passat from 0-60, is the 3.6L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 350 lbs/ft torque and 300 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Skoda Superb 2.0L petrol, which will beat your Volkswagen Passat to 60 by 0.1 seconds. That’s a big gap in Formula 1, but not something you would notice in your commute to work.

What size caravan or trailer, can the Volkswagen Passat tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the Volkswagen Passat 2.0L diesel which has 500 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 2200kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
