How much does the Vauxhall Astra cost to run?

The 1.6L diesel is the most economical Vauxhall Astra to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency.

The Vauxhall Astra 1.6L diesel is free to tax, as it sits in tax band A.

It does not far off 86 MPG on average, which means it will cost £7.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Peugeot 308 1.6L diesel and the more thirsty Audi A3 1.6L diesel.

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 13, which is lower than the Ford Focus 1.5L diesel, but higher than the Citroen C4 1.6L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Honda Civic has the lowest insurance group.)

Vauxhall Astra: How big is the boot?

The Vauxhall Astra estate has a bigger boot than the hatchback (it can hold 514 litres of luggage with the seats up).

This allows the estate to take one pushchair and 3 large bags or 4 large bags. While the hatchback takes just 3 large bags.

Worth knowing, the Peugeot 308 estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 5 large bags with its 810 litres.

Is the Vauxhall Astra easy to park?

This is one of the widest cars in the class, which makes it feel like a bit of a squeeze in the multi-stories. If that stresses you a bit, try the much narrower Skoda Rapid.

When it comes to parking on the street, the Astra is one of the hardest. It has a turning circle of 11m, and a length of 4499m, giving you a relatively small 301mm gap to turn the car in and out.

If you don’t have a drive, you should look at the best in class for parallel parking instead, the Suzuki Baleno.

Which Vauxhall Astra has the best performance?

The fastest Vauxhall Astra from 0-60, is the 2.0L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 320 lbs/ft torque and 240 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Audi A3 2.0L petrol, which will beat your Vauxhall Astra to 60 by 0.1 seconds. That’s a big gap in Formula 1, but not something you would notice in your commute to work.

What size caravan or trailer, can the Vauxhall Astra tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the Vauxhall Astra 1.6L diesel which has 350 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 1700kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
