How much does the Mazda 3 cost to run?

The 1.5L diesel is the most economical Mazda 3 to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency.

The Mazda 3 1.5L diesel is free to tax, as it sits in tax band A.

It does just over 74 MPG on average, which means it will cost £8.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Peugeot 308 1.6L diesel and the more thirsty Ford Focus 1.6L diesel.

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 14, which is lower than the Audi A3 1.6L diesel, but higher than the Ford Focus 1.5L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Honda Civic has the lowest insurance group.)

Mazda 3: How big is the boot?

The Mazda 3 saloon has a bigger boot than the hatchback (it can hold 422 litres of luggage with the seats up).

This allows the saloon to take one pushchair and 2 large bags or 3 large bags. While the hatchback takes just 2 large bags.

Worth knowing, the Peugeot 308 estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 5 large bags with its 810 litres.

Is the Mazda 3 easy to park?

The Mazda 3 is very middle of the road - it fills three quarters of a space. There are lots of wider cars, but just as many that are narrower and feel easier to park. For example, the Skoda Rapid.

When it comes to parking on the street, the 3 is one of the hardest. It has a turning circle of 11m, and a length of 4488m, giving you a relatively small 312mm gap to turn the car in and out.

If you don’t have a drive, you should look at the best in class for parallel parking instead, the Suzuki Baleno.

Which Mazda 3 has the best performance?

The fastest Mazda 3 from 0-60, is the 2.3L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 380 lbs/ft torque and 260 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.7L petrol, which will beat your Mazda 3 to 60 by 0.1 seconds. That’s a big gap in Formula 1, but not something you would notice in your commute to work.

What size caravan or trailer, can the Mazda 3 tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the Mazda 3 2.0L diesel which has 360 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 1700kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
