How much does the Mazda 2 cost to run?

The 1.5L diesel is the most economical Mazda 2 to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency.

The Mazda 2 1.5L diesel is free to tax, as it sits in tax band A.

It does just over 83 MPG on average, which means it will cost £7.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Peugeot 208 1.6L diesel and the more thirsty Citroen C3 1.6L diesel.

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 15, which is lower than the Citroen C3 1.6L diesel, but higher than the Ford Fiesta 1.5L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Ford KA+ has the lowest insurance group.)

Mazda 2: How big is the boot?

The Mazda 2 has a below average boot space (256 litres of luggage with the seats up).

This would allow one pushchair and one large bag. Alternatively you could load up with 2 large bags or 2 cabin bags instead.

Worth knowing, the Skoda Fabia estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 3 large bags with its 515 litres.

Is the Mazda 2 easy to park?

The Mazda 2 is very middle of the road - it fills just under three quarters of a space. There are lots of wider cars, but just as many that are narrower and feel easier to park. For example, the Hyundai I10.

If you don’t park in the street that much, then the 2 is fine. It will go in to an average street slot, giving you a gap of 822mm to swing in and out. But if you street park a lot you may want to look at the Smart Forfour.

Which Mazda 2 has the best performance?

The fastest Mazda 2 from 0-60, is the 1.5L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 148 lbs/ft torque and 115 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 8.7 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Fiat Punto 1.4L petrol, which will beat your Mazda 2 to 60 by 0.2 seconds. That doesn’t sound much, but in 0-60 terms it’s actually a big gap.

What size caravan or trailer, can the Mazda 2 tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the Mazda 2 1.6L diesel which has 205 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 1000kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
