How much does the BMW 5 Series cost to run?

The 2.0L diesel is the most economical BMW 5 Series to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency.

The BMW 5 Series 2.0L diesel costs £20.00 a year to tax, as it sits in tax band B. In fact this is the lowest CO2 output of any model in the Large Executive segment at the time of writing. Good job, BMW.

It does just over 72 MPG on average, which means it will cost £8.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

This is the best fuel economy in class, and better than the next three cars: Mercedes Benz E Class, Jaguar XF, Volvo V70

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 31, which is lower than the Audi A6 2.0L diesel, but higher than the Mercedes Benz E Class 2.0L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Volvo V70 has the lowest insurance group.)

BMW 5 Series: How big is the boot?

You can take your pick of three body shapes with the BMW 5 Series, ranging from the big boot in the estate to the smallest in the saloon.

In reality the estate, hatchback and saloon can all take 4 large bags.

Worth knowing, the Volvo V70 estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 5 large bags with its 815 litres.

Is the BMW 5 Series easy to park?

While not the absolute narrowest car (that is the Mercedes Benz E Class), this is in the top third for ease of parking in car parks. Given a typical supermarket space, it will fill just over three quarters of the space.

This car is actually 108mm longer than the average street space, so parallel parking will never be easy.

Which BMW 5 Series has the best performance?

The fastest BMW 5 Series from 0-60, is the 4.4L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 650 lbs/ft torque and 449 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Jaguar XF 5L petrol, which will beat your BMW 5 Series to 60 by 0.2 seconds. That doesn’t sound much, but in 0-60 terms it’s actually a big gap.

What size caravan or trailer, can the BMW 5 Series tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the BMW 5 Series 3.0L diesel which has 630 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 2100kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
