How much does the BMW 1 Series cost to run?

The 1.5L diesel is the most economical BMW 1 Series to run, taking into account insurance, tax and fuel efficiency. Compared to the competition in the Small Executive segment, it will make the smallest dent in your wallet.

The BMW 1 Series 1.5L diesel is free to tax, as it sits in tax band A.

It does just over 83 MPG on average, which means it will cost £7.00* in diesel every 100 miles driven.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it sits between the Volvo V60 2.4L diesel and the more thirsty Citroen DS5 1.6L diesel.

The lower the insurance group, the cheaper a car should be to insure. This model is rated insurance group 15, which is lower than the Volvo S60 1.6L diesel, but higher than the Audi A5 2.0L diesel. (If insurance cost is important to you then the Audi A4 has the lowest insurance group.)

BMW 1 Series: How big is the boot?

The BMW 1 Series hatchback has a bigger boot than the convertible (it can hold 358 litres of luggage with the seats up).

This allows the hatchback to take one pushchair and 2 large bags or 3 large bags. While the convertible takes just 2 large bags.

Worth knowing, the Volvo V60 estate is the best in class, allowing for one pushchair and 3 large bags with its 564 litres.

Is the BMW 1 Series easy to park?

Given a typical supermarket space, the 1 Series is easy to park. (If you want the detail it will fill just just under three quarters of the bay). This is as narrow as cars in the Small Executive class get, and gives you the maximum door opening space.

If the pressure of street parking gets to you, then this is the car to buy. It is shorter than anything else in its class, giving you a healthy 481mm gap in the space to manoeuvre the car.

Which BMW 1 Series has the best performance?

The fastest BMW 1 Series from 0-60, is the 3.0L petrol (if you’re a petrol head, it has 500 lbs/ft torque and 340 bhp). It hits 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

The closest rival in its class is the Mercedes Benz C Class 6.2L petrol, which will beat your BMW 1 Series to 60 by 0.1 seconds. That’s a big gap in Formula 1, but not something you would notice in your commute to work.

What size caravan or trailer, can the BMW 1 Series tow?

If you are towing you want good torque to pull away easily despite the extra weight, and the car needs to be at least 15% heavier than the caravan to keep you stable at speed.

The model that can tow the biggest caravan or heaviest trailer is the BMW 1 Series 2.0L diesel which has 450 lbs/ft torque. It should be able to tow a braked caravan or trailer that weighs up to 1500kg comfortably.

You must check your car handbook – maximum towing weights vary considerably with different engine and gearbox combinations.
