The Volkswagen ID.4 is the brand’s first-ever electric family SUV, and it comes with a huge range of benefits from practicality to incredible tech and safety features.

Despite this being one of VW’s first EVs, it isn’t diving directly into the deep end, because it sits on the same MEB platform as the Audi Q4 e-tron, Skoda Enyaq and Cupra Born – all of which are solid existing options.

There are six different trims on offer: Life; Style; Family; Max; GTX; and GTX Max. These all offer excellent features and are available with four different battery options that offer different ranges and power.

The ID.4’s main rivals are the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 and Nissan Ariya.

Is the Volkswagen ID.4 reliable?

Being an all-electric car, the ID.4 should be very reliable because there are fewer moving parts due to no engine. Also, because the ID.4 shares its platform with Audi, Skoda and Cupra models, it offers more tried-and-tested parts.

In terms of safety, the ID.4 scored a full five stars following its most recent Euro NCAP testing, offering very impressive safety for both adult and child occupants.

What are the Volkswagen ID.4 features?

Inside, the Volkswagen ID.4 offers a superb interior that looks like something out of a sci-fi film. All models come with a large central display that's powered by Volkswagen’s latest infotainment system, which is very crisp and easy to use. It can be controlled via the touchscreen or the touch-sensitive controls located on the steering wheel – or even by voice command if you’re feeling brave.

In front of the driver is a smaller 5.3-inch display that replaces the analogue dials. This shows all the information you could ever need, and offers excellent Android Auto or Apple CarPlay integration.

Rear passengers will have no issues when it comes to space, and there’s even more room because there’s no hump in the floor like you’d find on a car with an engine – meaning legroom is not an issue.

The cabin is filled with storage space and cupholders, and the boot measures in at a sizeable 543 litres, growing to 1,575 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

What's the Volkswagen ID.4 like to drive?

There are four different battery options. The first is the ‘Pure’, which is a 52kWh battery producing 148hp and gives the car 213 miles of range. This can be found on Life and Style model variants.

Moving up the range is the larger ‘Pure Performance’ battery, which is the same size and offers the same range as the ‘Pure’ but produces 170hp – it's available on Life and Style models.

Next up is the 'Pro Performance', which is a 77kWh battery that produces 204hp and should go 322 miles between charges. This is the best option if you favour range over anything else.

However, if you’re after proper power, then the range-topping GTX model is probably for you, producing 299hp from its 77kWh battery. This model can propel itself from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds and has a respectable 301 miles of range.
